Zimbabwe Tourist Office reviews Zimbabwe In Pictures

Keith Hern loves Zimbabwe – the people, places and wildlife and one of his dreams was to showcase the ‘real’ Zimbabwe for the outside world to see. Following his long and painful battle with throat cancer which led to Keith’s first book ‘Bangers and Mash’ he decided that the best way to achieve his goal was to write a book – or rather create a book of photos that reflected the true nature of the country. Zimbabwe in Pictures was published in December 2010 and the tourism board from Zimbabwe has just reviewed it;

“Thank you very much for your exceptional photography work on your recent
visit to Zimbabwe. In my experience of working with photo journalists on
Zimbabwe, the images you have produced are outstanding and second to none.
The photographs of people, animals and scenery bring out the reality and
beauty of Zimbabwe. We treasure your work in showcasing Zimbabwe
internationally” Zimbabwe Tourist Office

Travel agents have reacted extremely well to the book as well;

” Wow, pictures reflect Life  “as it is” in Zimbabwe: vibrant, Wild and Exciting.  The style of a  picture book, makes a fabulous coffee table book and brings the photographic experience, memories and experience straight into the hands and eyes of the reader. An absolute delight to see and immediately ignites  the desire to travel . Brilliant.” Penny Furseman Travel

We’ve managed the challenging task of getting the book into Amazon Kindle format too – Kindle can be read on any device with their free Amazon Kindle Readers – from computers to iPads – so we hope everyone can enjoy these wonderful photos.

The Lancet – Oncology – Reviews Throat Cancer and NLP Book

“Hern excellently describes living with cancer.” The Lancet

We mentioned in a previous article that our proudest moment as a publisher came with Keith Hern’s appearance as an advocate for a mouth cancer charity on ITV’s This Morning and the recent review in The Lancet came very close as well. The Lancet is the most revered of medical journals and to even get considered important enough for a review is an honour. Below are comments and extracts from the long review which appears in Volume 11, December 2010.

Bangers and Mash charts Keith’s battle against throat cancer with the help of NLP and the review is glowing on how well Keith describes that journey.

“Hern excellently describes living with cancer – working out how to tell family and friends, and combining everyday life with the endless hospital appointments, scans, and blood tests. Hern uses italics to express his thoughts and differentiate them from what he actually says to medical staff, on the whole this effectively communicates the “daily turmoil” of what is actually going on behind his clichéd brave face”.

Several hospitals, including the Royal Marsden where Keith was treated are using the book with patients. A recent comment from a team leader there reaffirms the Lancet’s comments;

“Yesterday, I was in a research session looking at the role of acupuncture to resolve dryness of the mouth after radiotherapy. There were about six participants during the session and while they got all these needles stuck on them, one of the patients talked about your book. He said that he thoroughly enjoyed reading your book and that it gave him reassurance that he was not alone in what he had gone through.”

That seems to be a key role for the book that is born out in dozens of testimonials from around the world. The frankness and honesty combined with the level of detail on the process he went through is helping lots of patients – facing all types of cancers. One patient fed back;

“Had an amazing day today met the team of docs and nurses who are going to make me better, they could not believe how happy and positive I was. I know our cancers are both different but i didn’t stop talking about your book ….and how step by step it helped me understand so much.  I never knew what pet and ct scans where or radio therapy was but your book told me not only what it does but how it feels which most docs dont know because they have never had it done”

The Lancet article also comments on how helpful Keith’s photography throughout the book is in painting the picture for cancer patients.

“The photographic diary of his cancer treatment is a more interesting and effective way of illustrating his treatment that using words alone, and generally this photographic approach works very well”.

The articles echos at the end the sentiment of many readers of the book;

“Bangers and Mash is a very personal look at the day-to-day reality of coping with cancer and the positive outcome of Hern’s treatment makes it an uplifting read”.

As one doctor’s review on Amazon says, it is a must read for all doctors, cancer sufferers and their families. Bangers and Mash is available from all good bookstores, Amazon Kindle and iBooks for the iPad. More on Keith’s battle in the Daily Mail article comparing his fight with that of Michael Douglas.

What Is The Most Loved NLP Book In The World? It’s The Most Hated One. Should it be renamed the Marmite Guide to NLP?

There is a vegetable spread called Marmite which plays on the fact that people either love it or hate it. On TV adverts people gush about it, or end up hitting the poor man inside the giant Marmite jar. Such has been the reaction to Going Mental, the new NLP coaching book from Jakob Lovstad. People either love it, or they hate it – nothing in between.

It should not have been a surprise for us as a publisher. The author himself warned us when we first read the manuscript that some of his views could be considered ‘harsh’ and indeed when one of the founders of NLP, John Grinder,  reviewed the book [his review appears on the back of the book in full] he echoed Jakob’s words that opinion on the book would be polarised. Grinder did say that the book was a must read for all NLP practitioners as it prompts people to look at things in a different way – you may not agree with Jakob’s opinions [on things like religion for example] but you simply cannot argue with his results.

Going Mental is in the author’s own words an alternative to all the ‘pat on the back’ type motivational coaching that has become the norm in NLP. Jakob trains MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters for a living, and he’s not a bad fighter in his own right. One reviewer of his book comments that when not achieving your goal means a foot in your neck you’d better get your coaching right – and this is how Jakob approaches NLP, with a kind of zero tolerance for failure. It’s this bluntness and lack of nurture that is one source of the ‘haters’. Another is quite simply more rooted in snobbery – that an MMA fighter can write an NLP coaching book has annoyed some of the hierarchy of NLP. One review on Amazon starts “I haven’t read the book, but……” and its this positioning that is way off.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Jakob in Stockholm (he’s from Norway so a short jump across to Sweden was a good place to meet up) to interview him ahead of the launch. I’ll admit that first impressions go along with the tough man persona – he’s deceptively big coming in at around 2 metres tall and with a fully shaved head he strikes a very intimidating figure. He later explained the lack of hair was due to the ‘no rules’ version of MMA they have in the Nordics where even hair grabbing is allowed.

The minute Jakob engages you in conversation though you see straight away what a highly intelligent and articulate man he is. In addition to being university educated at the Norwegian equivalent of MIT, he also did several years of a doctorate before the opportunities in MMA drew him away. In his book he explains the life changing introduction he had to NLP coaching. Following a terrible defeat his coach, blaming his lack of mental preparation, sent an injured Jakob to an NLP coach and he’s never looked back. He began adding NLP into the coaching of his fighters and found that physically and mentally trained fighters did so much better in the cage. He then started to apply the same techniques in his business coaching – and that’s where it really started to get interesting.

Entrepreneurs and business leaders, to be successful, display many of the characteristics of an MMA fighter, and Jakob has tapped into that. Drive, determination and critically preparedness play a big part in being successful – not just in business, but also in life Jakob argues. Before NLP Jakob admits he wasn’t a particularly nice person to know – post NLP he is more centred, has a long term partner [instead of the playboy he was before playing off his MMA fame] and is enjoying life a lot more. These days his time is split between mostly working with business people to still being involved with MMA.

If you want to comment on his book direct to his face [and are brave enough to do so] then in the spirit of openness that runs throughout his work Jakob has a Going Mental Facebook Page. It does have some of the top MMA fighters in the world as fans though, so make sure your comments are constructive.

Going Mental is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Amazon Kindle, iBooks for the iPad and iPhone and all other good bookstores.

A World Without Sherlock Holmes? – That Would Be The Reality Without Bertram Fletcher Robinson

In 2011 we finally have the irrefutable evidence behind the success of the Sherlock Holmes character and it was unveiled by Devon author and Holmes investigator, Paul R Spiring. In a local newspaper articles from the Herald Express and Western Morning News and in a BBC Wales radio interview Paul revealed how he came across the letters that prove that Arthur Conan Doyle had more than a little help with the key story that launched Holmes worldwide.

Winding the clock back to the early 20th century and Arthur Conan Doyle had killed Holmes off and while the character had achieved some limited success, this was largely restricted to the UK. A lifelong friend of Conan Doyle’s was a young man, himself an accomplished writer, called Bertram Fletcher Robinson. Not much was known about Robinson, other than that he had died tragically young, before the acclaimed biography published in 2008 called simply ‘Betram Fletcher Robinson – A Footnote To The Hound Of The Baskervilles‘ written and compiled by Spiring and Brian W Pugh.

In the biography Spiring and Pugh talk about the great friendship between Robinson and Conan Doyle and how they had ‘collaborated’ on ‘The H0und’ and that Robinson was often referred to as the ‘assistant plot producer’ for the book. The biography talks about a very talented writer who also collaborated with such big names as PG Wodehouse – you can read their main works in the 2009 book ‘Bobbles and Plum‘, and Max Pemberton on ‘Wheels of Anarchy‘ , but it was his friendship with Conan Doyle that is of the greatest interest.

Without a doubt if it wasn’t for ‘The Hound‘ there would be no Sherlock Holmes today. No movies, no BBC TV series, no legions of fans around the world. It was the story that turned Holmes into the worldwide phenomenon that has led to millions of fans, many films, hundreds of books and and ongoing legacy for Conan Doyle.

So what has Spiring uncovered? Quite simply the written proof that Conan Doyle paid his friend the modern day equivalent of £45,000 [£500 at the time] for his help on the story. Conan Doyle was due to receive an estimated £1/2m in modern day values for the story so the payment to Robinson was about 10% of what Conan Doyle was to get. This proves, beyond reasonable doubt, that Robinson made a significant contribution to the storyline. It is well documented that Conan Doyle lent on friends and particularly family for ideas and indeed characters for his storylines but for him to go as far as handing over such a huge sum of money for the input is significant.

What a shame it is that Robinson was taken from us at such a young age, dying shortly after from poisoning [in his biography Spring and Pugh go into the accusations that Conan Doyle was the one that poisoned him]. He was a very talented writer of similar storylines to Conan Doyle as well as the playlets he wrote with Wodehouse. You can read twenty of his stories in ‘Aside Arthur Conan Doyle‘ which was also compiled by Spiring.

So in summary, all Holmes fans need to give a big thanks to Bertram Fletcher Robinson, without whom they would not have their wonderful character – and personally a big thankyou to Paul Spiring for proving it once and for all.

Book Review – The Official Papers into the Matter Known as ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ – Sherlock Holmes Society of London

As a retired detective with the Metropolitan Police Keiron Freeburn has excellent experience which he has used to great effect with a very unusual take on The Hound of The Baskervilles. As with several reviews of this fascinating book the societies have been tough on the small mistakes, but another resounding thumbs up for a very unusual and memorable Holmes pastiche.

“What we have here, apparently, are facsimiles of the original case files from both Scotland Yard and Devon County Constabulary. In fact this collection of witness statements, medical reports, and police reports is the work of a former member of the Metropolitan Police CID, now living in Devon. The project is very nicely done, providing a fresh and completely valid view of the investigation. In particular it’s good to know how the two police forces regarded the summoning of a Scotland Yard man without reference to the Devon Constabulary!

There are some careless errors (the post-mortem report on Sir Charles Baskerville has Sir Henry’s name on the first page; Mrs Lyons is called “Miss Lyons” throughout; Selden’s name changes from Arthur to Albert; Barrymore once refers to his wife as his sister). Such matters are easily attended to, though. A corrected edition of this fascinating and very worthwhile new look at a familiar classic will be something to treasure.”

The book is available from all good bookstores around the world – as the whole point of the book is the Victorian fonts the book is only available in printed format [so no Kindle or iPad versions].

In the USA the book is available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

In the UK the book is available from Amazon, Book Depository [free worldwide delivery], and Waterstones.

Book Review – Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and Devon: A Complete Tour Guide and Companion – Sherlock Holmes Society of London

One of our most popular books of 2010 and nominated for several awards, this wonderful guide has done well in all formats and will no doubt be a travel companion for many visiting Devon in 2011.

“A couple of years ago, Messrs Pugh and Spiring broke new ground with On the Trail of Arthur Conan Doyle: An Illustrated Devon Tour. This latest book is essentially an enlarged and improved version, benefiting greatly from the participation of a distinguished Devon historian. We knew that Conan Doyle was briefly in practice in Plymouth with the volatile Dr George Turnavine Budd, and that he later visited Dartmoor in company with his friend Bertram Fletcher Robinson to research local colour for The Hound of the Baskervilles, but Devon can claim another man, no less important to the success of the author and his immortal character — Sir George Newnes, founder and publisher of The Strand Magazine. Each man’s life and career, and his contribution to the life of the county, are summarised in the first hundred pages, with well-chosen illustrations.

Then some 220 pages are devoted to the much-expanded Devon tour. Even without the literary interest the tour would be worth undertaking, as the county is so remarkably varied and beautiful, but the chance to walk in the footsteps of Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes is almost irresistible. The book’s easy readability belies the awe-inspiring amount of research that’s gone into it.”

The book is available worldwide from all good bookstores.

In the USA direct from MX Publishing, AmazonBarnes and Noble, Amazon Kindle and iTunes [iPad and iPhone via iBooks].

In the UK from MX Publishing, Amazon, and Amazon Kindle.

Book Review – The Sign of Fear – Sherlock Holmes Society of London

‘The Sign of Fear’ is the first in a series of Holmes pastiche novels from Molly Carr, a life long Dr. Watson expert. It features Mrs. Watson as a strong female lead character andthe book has gained very posititive reviews from Holme societies around the world. Here, Roger Johnson from the Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews the book for their newsletter;

“Never mind what you’ve been told: the former Mary Morstan is a woman with a past — so perhaps it’s natural that she should come within the orbit of the Napoleon of Crime. At least we can understand that she should occupy the time during Dr Watson’s long absences by doing detective work herself. More surprising is the identity of her partner, a dangerous young woman to whom male costume is nothing new: “Emily Fanshaw” is actually Mrs Neville St Clair, and she still resents the fact that Sherlock Holmes cut short her husband’s profitable scam by exposing him as the beggar with the twisted lip…

There are more surprises in Mary Watson’s memoirs, not least the revelation that John H Watson, who never qualified as a doctor, was born Ormond Sacker and changed his name by deed poll! Other dubious characters encountered by the intrepid duo include A J Raffles, Bunny Manders, John Clay, Mrs Marple (mother of Jane), and M. Poirot (father of Hercule). Rather like M J Trow’s stories of Inspector Lestrade, the book takes a distinctly revisionist approach to the Canon. The Sign of Fear is something of a guilty pleasure, perhaps, but a pleasure it certainly is!”

Roger Johnson, Sherlock Holmes Society of London

The Sign of Fear is available from all good bookstores including Amazon USA, Barnes and Noble USAAmazon UK, Amazon Kindle USA, Book Depository (free delivery to Canada and India), and for the iPad and iPhone through iTunes iBooks.

The sequel to The Sign of Fear, ‘A Study In Crimson‘ was release in November 2010.

The Last Book Shopping Day For Christmas?

The answer is 25th December if you are online – 24th if you are a physical shop. That’s not a typo, if you are a bookseller or publisher then the online appetite from consumers won’t stop when the tills in the shops close on Christmas Eve. Shopping on Christmas Day is a relatively new phenomenon. In 2008 as in years before, shopping online started to slow down around the 16th December and stopped almost altogether on the 19th.

In 2009 we passed a significant point in our shopping cultural evolution. Some time during 2009 shopping online became a daily activity and we saw purchases continue throughout the last week before the holidays and on Christmas Day itself UK consumers spent an unprecedented £120m+ online.  Read more

Meeting the NLP Practitioner and coach that also happens to be a leading MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Fighter

Going Mental

There are few more fascinating author  interviews I’ve conducted over the years than my meeting with Jakob Lovstad, author of ‘Going Mental – Reaching your Goals in Business and Sports – Full Contact NLP Coaching From a Full Contact Fighter. We met in a very cold and snowy Stockholm and chatted about the book, his coaching and his fighting. Jakob is in the top 10 Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters in Europe, a fighting coach and now NLP practitioner and business coach.

Physically Jakob is a big guy. Around 2 metres tall and he fights in the light heavyweight class. With his hair shaven close to his scalp – having hair is a potential weakness in some classes of MMA where hair grabbing is allowed – he cuts a pretty intimidating figure. As soon as he begins to talk you realise that behind this tough exterior lies a very intelligent and articulate coach. He may ply his trade knocking seven bells out of his counterparts in the ring, but the key to his and the fighters he trains success is born out of NLP. Don’t tell anyone, as it may affect his “Striking Viking” persona in the cage, but this is one very clever guy. Jakob went to the Norwegian equivalent of MIT and spent 4 years working on his PHD before he made the unusual move into MMA.

Jakob was introduced to NLP by a coach following a disastrous fight in which a cocky and arrogant (his own words) Lovstad went into the ring injured and wholly mentally unprepared. After a very bad and humiliating beating he spent much of the recovery time learning NLP which proved a revelation for him. Jakob realised the potential to add NLP based preparation to a fighters training and set about building a program for MMA fighters.  The results have been excellent with the program creating top fighters that are also mentally prepared for their fights. Jakob saw the natural transition to bring the techniques into the business world and now works with business leaders with a no-nonsense coaching philosophy and interesting offers a ‘no-change, no-fee’ deal to his clients. A very unique type of business coach.

John Grinder, co-founder of NLP agrees that Jakob is a very unusual case;

“Consider, however the context – while I could well be wrong, I doubt that many of the professional full contact fighters concern themselves about such philosophical issues as the possibility of objectivity, the distinction between reality and experience, the issue of whether life has meaning or is it that we simply create the meaning in our lives. Jakob does. And this makes for a lively insight into this very special world.”

Whilst some of the philosophies Jakob puts across will no doubt be controversial [he advocates a ‘personal religion’ rather than subscribing to any of the traditional religions for example] Grinder goes on to say how in fact Jakob’s work is a great demonstration of NLP

“NLP (especially New Code NLP) has as its focus the extraordinary, the genius, in whatever field of endeavor. Here is a narrative about its consequences embodied in a cage fighter – have a look – the patterns are perfectly applicable to what you do as well as what Jakob does.”

My favourite comment on Jakob’s concept of ‘full contact NLP’ comes from Jorgen Rasmussen:

“Despite the fact that I disagree strongly with some of his philosophy, Jakob’s results using NLP patterning to become a high achiever in the toughest sport on earth speaks for itself. When the consequences of your ideas not working properly is a shin to the neck, you are pretty much forced to find out what actually works and what is B.S.”

Jakob still fights, with his next major bout coming up in March and he insists this helps him with his business clients. It is a strong demonstration that the techniques he is applying with them are similar to those he is using before stepping into the cage with some of the world’s leading MMA fighters. Jakob uses the phrase “battle tested” for his methods and he’s very passionate about what he sees as a ‘regurgitation bandwagon’ with several writers simply re-hashing the original NLP principles – and on that point he has a lot of supporters.

So the consensus is that Going Mental is a very valid, interesting and valuable contribution to the overall NLP field – even if you don’t agree with some of the strong views expressed within. One thing is for sure, the next few months as his publisher is going to be an interesting ride.

Going Mental is available through all good bookstores, on Amazon Kindle, Kobo Books and iBooks (iPad and iPhone). To contact Jakob about speaking at an event (he’s very good in front of large audiences) visit his website www.allconfidence.com.
