The Top NLP Books for the Christmas List

Here are some recommendations for NLP books this christmas – ones that we ourselves will be gifting to friends and family. Some are for specific groups of people, but we kick off with one general one on New Year Resolutions.  Make New Year Resolutions and Keep Them Using NLP (Donna Blinston). The majority of us see the new year as an opportunity to make changes in our lives, and whether you have a formal new years resolution list, or just want to find a way to keep to a few specific things, this simple and practical book from Donna Blinston has worked wonders. Chris and Amazon reviewer comments I bought this book to help me get fit, I found it really easy to read and very beneficial. A lot of its contents are quite common sense when brought to your attention and without out them I believe I would still be where I was.”

NLP For Parents and NLP For Children. Judy Bartkowiak’s Engaging NLP series (which now includes Teens and Tweens) takes NLP and applies half a dozen to a dozen techniques to specific groups. Each book is 80-100 pages long and contains easy to implement methods to situations specific to the life stages involved. There are also books for New Mums, for Work, Teacher and others, and it is the NLP for Parents and NLP for Children books that are the most popular.

Bangers and Mash. For any person dealing with cancer, family members and friends, Keith Hern’s incredible moving book takes us on a journey with him as he battled throat cancer the first time around. Keith is a photographer so there are plenty of amazing pictures as well. With the aid of an NLP coach, Keith has beaten cancer twice, and is once again currently using a host of NLP techniques in his third battle against cancer. Keith is a leading advocate of the use of NLP with cancer patients and many hospitals have in fact changed their procedures after reading the book.

Seeing Spells Achieving (Bendefy and Hickmott). The #1 NLP book in the world for learning difficulties since 2006, the book is still in the UK top 20 NLP books and has helped turn around the lives of tens of thousands of people – mainly children – with a variety of learning difficulties such as dyslexia. When first launched is what seen as revolutionary – applying NLP techniques in this field – and six years later is regarded as the definitive book that many others have built upon.

Negotiation Mastery. We can all do with some help in negotiation, whether its in business or in our personal lives. This new book comes from the position of creating the ‘win-win’ and is getting incredible reviews. The author, Simon Horton, has even trained top hostage negotiators and his no-nonsense approach is very easy to follow.

Influencing The Interview. Getting a job in the challenging economy is extremely tough and Chris Delaney should know – he runs a recruitment business. Chris is also an NLP practitioner and in this book he shares all the secrets of maximising your influence in that all important job interview using a host of NLP and hypnotherapy techniques

And The Next Question Is? Getting the necessary information is all down to how good your questions are and this book has thousands of insightful questions that will live long in many coaches and practitioners toolkits.

Finally, a fun book that includes a chapter on NLP from one of the world’s most fascinating mentalists – Joe Riggs. ‘The Real Sherlock Holmes’ is a book that explains the deductive techniques that con-artists and charlatans use to garner facts about people – many of which are used by the world’s most famous consulting detective Sherlock Holmes. The title of the book comes from a major US newspaper reporter who, on witnessing Riggs’s deductive skills, dubbed him ‘the real Sherlock Holmes’ and the name stuck.

Social media (including Facebook) threat to adopted children grows in UK

Adoption and NLP expert Helen Oakwater’s new book, Bubble Wrapped Children, released this week, has generated a worldwide storm lifting the lid on a major crisis within adoption.

Reuters, The Times (in a front page article), The Sun, The Australian, The Daily Mail are among dozens of major media outlets that carried features on Thursday and Friday.

Helen also appeared on SKY News and ITV’s Daybreak interviews.

Here is the SKY News interview.

Below is an extract the article from Reuters.

Reuters – LONDON | Thu Jan 5, 2012.

British youngsters adopted after abusive childhoods are at risk of fresh emotional turmoil as some birth parents turn to Facebook and other social networking sites to track them down, adoption agencies said on Thursday. The ease with which birth parents can use technology to get in touch with their children without warning and without following established safeguards has alarmed adoption agencies.

Families who have been contacted have described the experience as like being in a “slow motion car crash” leaving them “battered and bruised.” Some families have been torn apart. “Social networking sites have blown things open — you can’t keep things secret,” said Julia Feast, consultant at the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), which campaigns for children in care.

“It really unsettles the whole family,” she told Reuters. “It’s like a bomb being thrown inside it and you don’t know how you are going to pull the pieces together again if children are not being prepared.”

Under British law, birth parents cannot access the adoption records of their children and usually, in the days before social networking, it was very difficult for them to make contact.

Since 2005, adopted adults and their birth relatives have had the legal right to ask for intermediary services from an approved agency to help them make contact with each other, but this can be turned down if there are concerns following an assessment.

It is not known how many birth parents are using social networking sites to get around this, but the BAAF said it was receiving “more and more cases.”

Bubble Wrapped Children is available from all good bookshops including Barnes and Noble USA and Amazon UK, and in most electronic formats including Amazon Kindle.

Does 14 books in the NLP Top 100 make us the UK’s No.1 independent NLP Publishers?

NLP books is a large and competitive market with a quick look at Amazon UK yielding 1,751 books listed and some quite heavyweight publishers involved. Of course the big named gurus are there in the top 100 with Richard Bandler and Paul McKenna with several titles and the ‘Dummies’ series expanding out to several titles too.

Stop Bedwetting in 7 DaysWe often see ourselves (MX Publishing) as an independent who specialise in publishing subject specific NLP books. We started in the field back in 2006 with Seeing Spells Achieving which has helped tens of thousands of children with learning difficulties (including dyslexia) and our current best-selling book Stop Bedwetting in 7 Days which continues to grow a big fan base – because it has worked for thousands of children.

These applications of NLP are too niche for a big publishing house and indeed, some of our authors are publishing their more general NLP books with the big boys – and that’s quite all right with us. We know our place in the food chain as a medium-sized independent.

With 20+ authors and 14 books in the top 100 in the UK does that mean we are the leading independent in NLP? Maybe, but actually it doesn’t really matter. For us it is about being able to publish NLP books that make a positive impact on people’s lives. It may sound a little trite, but we’re not in publishing for the big bucks [we’d have accepted a lot of bad but mass market books if that was the case].

No More Bingo DressesMX Publishing is best described as a ’cause-led’ publisher. We have several streams from Victorian literature through to NLP but one thing binds them all. We publish books that we can get passionate about [note: a few exceptions in our early years when bills had to get paid…..] and we are fortunate that we can stay true to that.

One of our proudest moments was when Keith Hern was interviewed on ITV’s This Morning as an advocate for throat cancer awareness. His interview reached millions and his book Bangers and Mash has been acclaimed by cancer units all around the world from the USA, UK to Tasmania. A quick read through the sixteen 5-star reviews on Amazon and you can see the passion with which people talk about Keith’s book. This year we published our fourth book on NLP and cancer – Rosie O’Hara’s inspirational book on breast cancer No More Bingo Dresses and once again five star passionate reviews abound.

As we are smaller, we can be relatively agile and have been able to embrace social media (5800+ members of our NLP Books Facebook Page), overall more than 60,000 followers on Twitter and we sell books in more than 20 countries in already about 8 formats from Kindle, to Kobo, Overdrive to iBooks (iPad and iPhone).

There’s much we can improve and especially we want to generate links and collaboration with NLP organisations in the USA and worldwide. We have some great titles that do a lot of good and want to get them in the hands of as many practitioners as possible.

So if you are involved in NLP and would like to get engaged with lots of books that have practical applications then please get in touch – trade@mxpublishing.co.uk.

A light at the end of the tunnel for 13 year old bedwetting sufferer and her family

Stop Bedwetting in 7 DaysThere are times as a publisher when you feel particularly proud, especially with books that can be described as ‘life changing’. Our No.1 bestselling book worldwide is giving us such moments on a regular basis. Coming up to it’s 2nd birthday, ‘Stop Bedwetting in 7 Days’ goes from strength to strength. Now being recommended by healthcare professionals due to its more than 80% success rate the book is currently the #5 ranked NLP book in the UK [and popular too in the USA]. Bedwetting is best caught as young as possible, but Alicia Eaton’s method (a unique combination of NLP and hypnotherapy) works all the way up to teenage sufferers. We wanted to share a recent review in full as it will give hope to a lot of families:

“My daughter is 13 and has been suffering from eneurisis (bedwetting) all her life which has been a considerable trial for her, but also the rest of the family. It has been difficult to cope with the smelly laundry and keeping the house fresh (although we never mentioned anything to her her friends have!) but for my daughter herself the emotional burden has been huge. She has been frightened to have sleepovers in case anyone sees or smells anything. She has had to shower thoroughly every morning and has felt the need to use lots of body spray as back-up. She has lacked in confidence to the extent that I got in touch with Kidscape which helped a lot but later also consulted with a GP who identified an excellent MIND course for teenagers because, whilst she was frequently aggressive and even violent at home – probably as a side-effect, she was being bullied at school (or took it that way due to her lack of confidence).

She has always been a deep sleeper such that you could basically explode a bomb and she would sleep right through.

We have tried lifting at night and had several concerted stints with a bed alarm where she would wake for the first night a couple of times and maybe once the second night and then start to unplug the alarm whilst remaining in a deep sleep as she became more and more tired. Our GP, and later an eneurisis specialist, recommended that we use desmopressin but I considered this to be an extreme solution which in any case had no effect – indeed I believe it may have increased the production of urine. A second medication was also offered to be used in conjunction. I do not want my child full of medication but we gave them both a try from time to time in desperation.

When ordering a new sensor for the alarm I chanced upon this book and reading the write up I thought that whilst it sounded too good to be true it was worth a try as I could see hints that it might be suitable for the way my daughter thinks.

I got the book and what a revelation. Very short and to the point I could see that it had HUGE potential. I read it from cover to cover so that I could fully understand the principles behind the programme and decided that for my daughter, provided I could stay 100% positive and certain it would work, she would soon start to reap the benefits. I could however see that the title was perhaps a bit misleading. The 7 days referred to is the length of the preparation before the programme actually starts. How long it takes to achieve dryness is not certain but the programme definitely starts to create the right brain training for a child to help them get themselves dry.

My daughter seemed to think it would take 7 days from a standing start so she kept putting off starting the programme because she expected a magic bullet. I was not happy about this so I downloaded the sound file and got her to put it on her phone and MP3 (with a different name of course!) so she could start listening to it. After 4 days she was determined to start the programme and on day 5 of the preparation she had her first ever completely dry night even with a full 11 hours asleep. This alone was enough to take her by surprise and motivate her – she had been sure it would not work!

At the time of writing we are almost two weeks in since starting the programme, and two and a half weeks since she began listening to the download. She has had several completely dry nights where she has managed to wake up and get herself to the toilet in time (sometimes 3 times in one night) without any problem – her brain has done the right thing. She has had a few nights where she has woken just as she was beginning to wet and has managed to recover the situation and get to the toilet before any sheets are wet. She has even had two completely sleep all the way through dry nights. For my daughter with her prolonged history of being wet and her bad experiences with being lifted and/or using an alarm this is a major breakthrough. She is already much happier, the washing machine is seeing much less laundry and she was confident enough after only ten days to spend four nights sleeping with two of her friends on a camp.

We bought several identical new sheets, three pairs of identical pyjama sets in the sale and some disposable mats which we put under the sheets (which I stacked mat, sheet, mat, sheet). She managed two nights completely dry, one with a wet sheet and one where her shorts were slightly damp.

I have to say this is HUGE for both her and me. If you have a determined child I suggest using this programme before they get to 13 and have loads of failures behind them. This programme puts them in charge and helps them programme their own brain in a positive way. The potential for how this programme works goes way beyond dealing with bedwetting.

For the price of a pack of pull-ups and a laundry load this book is worth every penny. If it does not work on its own it may be necessary to unpick wider emotional issues – we did this the other way round, finding this fantastic book late in the day, but as they say ‘better late than never’.”

The book is available from all good book stores, Amazon USA, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Kobo and increasingly popular on iTunes (6 countries) for the iPad and iPhone. An ideal book for parents but also for NLP practitioners as close to one in 5 children suffers with bedwetting at some point.
