Review of Rendezvous at the Populaire

“ A tough assignment for an art student would be to paint a cohesive painting by mixing the styles of two different artists. An example would be using both the style of Rubens and Picasso, or maybe Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Difficult, yes?

That is sort of what Kate Workman has accomplished with this stunning tale that mixes the world of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the world of Gaston Leroux. The world’s greatest detective meets the mad genius of Erik, the Phantom of the Opera.

Holmes has reached a low point in his life. Having been seriously wounded in his right leg, Holmes has been told by Watson that he will need a cane for the rest of his life. Holmes is despondent and worries that he needs to retire.

Then a letter arrives from Paris. The new owners of the Paris Opera House, The Opera Populaire, are asking for aid. The Opera House is being held hostage by a phantom who demands monthly payments, a prime seat in the boxes, and occasionally suggests who should sing which role.

Having taken singer Christine Daae under his wing for private lessons, the Phantom wants her to be the star. When his demands are not met, he sends the heavy chandelier crashing into the stage and orchestra pit. He also hangs a man from the catwalks, scaring the entire opera.

Holmes learns that the Phantom has always been at the Opera House and that the former owner had no trouble, for he paid the Phantom’s monthly stipend and did not rent box five. The new owners are determined to defy the Phantom, even though they can afford to pay the stipend.

Join the battle of wits as Holmes beards the Phantom in his own lair beneath the Opera. Genius recognizes genius, and the two have more in common than either realizes at first. Like our art student, Kate Workman deftly wields both brushes, staying true to the Holmes tales and true to the Phantom, but making her masterpiece stand on its own. The twist ending is like the final flourish of brush on canvas, when the artist signs his work.

This novel is worth plus five out of five stars for the originality of the Holmes/Phantom blend! Encore!”

Review of The Demon of the Dusk

This is a truly great Holmes story! Kudos are given for the remarkable final reveal. I found the book to be fast paced but the characters very well developed. Action adventure, mystery and a hint of a ghost story combine to create a tale well worth the reading!

I give the book five stars…

Review of The Criminal Mastermind of Baker Street

Let us suppose that Holmes was not the consulting detective of the canon and bitter enemy to Professor Moriarty. Picture him instead as a “consulting criminal,” head of a vast criminal empire spreading its wings over London, Britain, and creeping into the rest of the world. Moriarty is a rival, trying to push Holmes out as “the Napoleon of Crime.”

That is the premise of this book. Nunn has taken the entire canon, including the cases mentioned in passing by Watson, but unrecorded.  He even brings in one of the stories from Doyle’s Tales of Mystery and Horror, The Lost Special!” Each adventure is woven into the story from the viewpoint that Holmes masterminded them with Watson as a Lieutenant in Holmes’ operation…

It really is a well thought out plot and the inclusion of some many cases doesn’t stop the flow of the story at all! Nunn has been extremely successful in his makeover of the Holmes canon.

Review of Seventeen Minutes to Baker Street

“This novel is a retelling of “The Problem of Thor Bridge.” The tale is expanded and has a slightly different slant than the original. J. Neil Gibson, The Gold King is accompanied to 221B by Samuel Clemens, AKA “Mark Twain.” In fact, Twain has recommended Holmes to his friend, and when the man bolts from Baker Street it is Clemens that brings him back…

This makes for a really strong story! That the ending changes don’t affect Holmes’ triumph at all and makes perfect sense with the evidence given! I doubt that even a Holmes purist could find much fault with the story. I am not saying that because Mark Twain is my favorite author—he is, by the way—but because this is truly an amazing story!

I give this book five stars!“

Review of Sherlock Holmes and the Baron of Brede Place

“This is volume two in this series paring Holmes with various American authors… The character of the twisted blackmailer, already known to be dark and pitiless, is shown to be even more of a devil than any reader already knows! The book is packed with action and drama! The characters are well developed and the pacing is superb!… I give the book five stars!”

Review of The Twisted Blackmailer

I should point out, first of all, that if you are a Holmes purist, this book is not for you. This book has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street and his faithful Boswell, Doctor John Watson.

If you have read down to this point, I will say that once you have made that determination, the book is rare in that it is enjoyable, and I read it in one setting!

Lovers of the Holmes Canon will delight at finding many references to people, places, and cases in this story. Sherlock Holmes is like the daughter Holmes never had. This is the first case involving this Holmes and Watson. I would love to see more…

I give the book five stars. While not a traditional Holmes story, I believe the writing is just as enjoyable!

Review of Sherlock Holmes: Hitler’s Messenger of Death

“…The story winds through a series of deadly encounters with Nazi agents. Holmes and Watson, accompanied by an agent of M known only as “James,” are captured and nearly killed several times over. Burning houses, speeding trains, auto chases and more bring our heroes and the Nazis closer and closer to a showdown.

The final face-off takes place aboard the doomed Hindenburg on its flight to the United States. The final reveal is a welcome surprise. Good show, Petr Macek!

I give the book five stars! It rocks!

Review of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories Part V: Christmas Adventures

Volume V of this amazing series contains thirty-one short works of Holmes fiction. Giving a line or two to each would take up more lines of review than the average reader would be willing to peruse. Overall, the book is awesome! The major reason I am now in possession of Volume VI is a statement to the quality of the stories in this series!…Given the incredible amount of talent shining in this MX series, how could I give the volume anything except FIVE STARS PLUS!

Review of Irregular Lives

This has been most fascinating! I believe this book fills a place that has too long been missing from the world of Sherlock Holmes. The Baker Street Irregulars feature in many of the canonical stories, yet other than Wiggins we seldom know their names. Even with Wiggins mentioned, his life outside of being one of Holmes eyes and ears is a total blank.

This book explores the boys (and girls) that make up the Baker Street Irregulars…

I loved the book although I really felt the ending was so sad! I give the book five stars! I would love to see this point explored even further! Good show, Kim Krisco! Bravo and encore!
