The Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories Part IX and X, 2018 Annual

“These two latest volumes maintain the high standard set three years ago by editor and publisher. Parts IX and X between them contain thirty-seven new stories, all as faithful as possible to the canonical tradition and style. The authors include Sonia Fetherston, S.F. Bennett, Mark Mower, Kelvin Jones, Jayantika Ganguly, Daniel D Victor, Hugh Ashton, Tim Symonds and David Marcum himself. There’s also a play by the late Jim French, and another by Leslie Charteris and Denis Green – a nice addendum to Sherlock Holmes: The Lost Radio Scripts. Nicholas Meyer, whose novel The Seven-per-Cent Solution effectively began the age of quality Holmes pastiche, contributes a foreword. Neither editor nor authors will benefit financially, as all royalties go towards the conservation of Undershaw, Conan Doyle’s former Surrey home, which now houses Stepping Stones School. The books are treasurable and the cause is admirable.

Out today: The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories – Part IX and X

Once again, the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson continue in this acclaimed anthology series, with thirty-seven new tales presented in two companion volumes – more Holmes than could fit into one book!
In 2015, The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories was first published, a huge three-book set featuring over sixty new traditional Holmes exploits, all set within the correct time period. Soon, the demand for even more traditional Holmes adventures led to further volumes. The next year brought Part IV: 2016 Annual, and then Part V: Christmas Adventures. In spring 2017 there was Part VI: 2017 Annual, and that fall revealed the massive two-volume set, Parts VII and VIII: Eliminate the Impossible. Now we present another two simultaneous volumes, Parts IX and X: 2018 Annual (1879-1895) and (1896-1916).
There can be no argument that Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous and recognizable figures in the world. There were only sixty narratives brought to us by the original Literary Agent, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Clearly that is not enough.
Watson once wrote that he kept his unpublished cases in his old Tin Dispatch Box. Now, with the publication of these latest volumes, that box has again been explored by some of today’s best Sherlockian writers, all of whom are donating their royalties from these anthologies toward the restoration of Undershaw, one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s houses, and the location where The Hound of the Baskervilles and many later Holmes stories were completed.
Climb the seventeen steps to the sitting room at 221b Baker Street. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are waiting…
The game is afoot!

It is totally amazing that this exciting series has reached ten volumes! This means over 140 stories, articles and words of wisdom from the world of Sherlock Holmes’ finest! David Marcum has pulled all the stops out on continuing to deliver volume after volume of sterling work. We sincerely hope that this volume is not the last!” – Raven’s Reviews

Publishers Weekly reviews The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories, Part VII: Eliminate the Impossible

Marcum continues to impress with the quality of his selections, many from little-known authors, in his seventh anthology of traditional pastiches (after The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories, Part VI: 2017 Annual). The 23 entries all contribute to this volume’s goal, as Marcum states in his introduction, of assembling “what seemed to be supernatural tales, but with real-world endings.” Consistent with Conan Doyle’s depiction of his hero as a hard-headed rationalist, these stories pit Holmes against ghosts, vampires, and fairies. Apart from the clever solutions to puzzles involving a seemingly haunted clock (Gayle Lange Puhl’s “The Case of the Cursed Clock”) and spirit photographs (James Moffett’s “The Blank Photograph”), contributors have not hesitated to deepen the depictions of Holmes and Watson. Some entries focus on minor characters and relatively trivial concerns. For example, Mike Hogan is open to the idea that not all of Mrs. Hudson’s cuisine was appealing in “The Tranquility of the Morning.” The standout, Thomas A. Turley’s “A Ghost from Christmas Past,” offers moving insights into Watson’s tragic family life. Sherlockians eager for faithful-to-the-canon plots and characters will be delighted.

The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories – Eliminate The Impossible is available from all good bookstores including The Strand Magazine,  Amazon USABarnes and Noble USAAmazon UK, and for free shipping worldwide Book Depository – volume VII is also available in KindleKoboNook and Apple iBooks (iPad/iPhone) formats.

Review of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories: Part VI—2017 Annual

The traditional pastiche is alive and well, as shown by the 35 Sherlock Holmes stories in Marcum’s excellent sixth all-original anthology (after 2016’s The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories: Part V—Christmas Adventures). This volume showcases talented, lesser-known authors who offer a wide variety of mysteries for Holmes to solve, including a classic locked-room murder (David Friend’s “The Adventure of the Apologetic Assassin”) and a genuine rarity, a whydunit in which the killer’s identity is never in question but his motive is (Jennifer Copping’s “The Adventure of the Vanishing Apprentice”). David Timson’s “The Adventure of the Wonderful Toy” makes especially creative use of Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph, which is used as a tool for extortion. Many entries manage to craft baffling mysteries that don’t involve crimes of violence, and others offer ingenious extrapolations from Watson’s cryptic references to untold cases, such as Hugh Ashton’s “The Adventure of the Returned Captain,” a take on “the loss of the British barque Sophy Anderson.” This is a must-have for all Sherlockians.”
