Is now the right time to invest in the Brazilian property market?

The growing Brazilian real estate market is backed up by robust economic conditions and historically unparalleled political stability. Brazil is determined to become a leading economic power in the world within the coming years and it certainly has the resources and willpower to do so.  This week there is a free London seminar on discovering how to invest profitably and securely in Brazil.

Brazil is a land of superlatives and intriguing contrasts: the fifth largest country in the world; the eighth biggest economy; where enormous metropolises, infrastructures and space age industries lie side by side with vast unexplored expanses of jungle terrain, sheltering as yet uncontacted indigenous tribes; not to forget that it is arguably the most successful footballing nation ever to have graced the world stage.

On a par with its outstanding natural beauty, the Brazilian people are extremely welcoming towards visitors, and share a never-ending zest for life that can be hard to match anywhere else.

Its economy is projected to become the world’s fifth largest within the next half century -the housing market is forecast to perform rather well in the coming years.

In effect, Brazil has now become one of the most desirable locations for persons looking to acquire a second home, whether for holiday or retirement purposes, and also for those simply looking to invest in real estate, for the reasons outlined above and in view of the low value of the Brazilian currency and very inexpensive real estate market. Property prices are indeed quite low in comparison to European countries, generally representing excellent value for money.

Real estate investments are widely recognised as one of the safest and surest methods for motivated individuals to achieve financial independence in the long term. Emerging economies such as Brazil can offer very attractive deals for investors where dream apartments can be owned for just a fraction of the price of an equivalent unit in more mature real estate markets. The Brazilian construction industry is just starting to take off in a huge way and new developments are extremely spacious and finished to a very high standard. Elsewhere, similar luxuries may often be found to be prohibitively expensive.

Add to this the lure of a tropical destination, the intoxicating scenery, benign climate, and the reality of owning a small piece of paradise. The temptation to rush into a deal quickly, without having really carried out all the right groundwork, may in the end prove overwhelming. Such an approach may sometimes work out okay under fortunate circumstances. However, the legal issues involved in property transactions in Brazil are often extremely complex to say the least However, the phenomenal amount of time, money and effort that can be saved by hiring the services of a reputable and knowledgeable legal team to negotiate matters favourably on behalf of the client will undoubtedly be an extremely wise investment decision.

Another great resource is the Brazilian Property Guide, endorsed by the World Trade Organisation.

Lose Weight In 20 Minutes – Can you lose weight with no dieting, no stopping drinking, just small behaviour changes? It appears so.

As a publisher we have about 100 books and about 60 authors now, and sometimes we publish a book that we use ourselves. That’s the case with the new book from Alex Buckley – Ssh! Lose Weight in 20 Minutes. I couldn’t help but feel that Alex was talking about me in his description of a 40 year old who spends time commuting, in front of a computer, likes my food and wine and doesn’t do enough exercise. Sound familiar? Alex was fat – in fact, he was clinically obese and his GP had told him so. He’d tried every diet going and couldn’t stick to them. He has a wife and three children and hit a revelation that his life was heading to be much shorter than he wanted.

The principle behind his book and method is blindingly simple. Make small, incremental changes in your lifestyle that can become habitual and you will lose weight gradually and it will stay off. He’s living proof having lost more than 3 stones (42lb, 19 kilos) and he hasn’t stopped drinking, eating what he wants or significantly increased his exercise.

Alex isn’t a doctor, psychologist, fitness trainer or guru, he’s just an ordinary (ex) fat man who has discovered something pretty special. All the doctors and trainers that have read his book have given it a hearty thumbs up as it’s really basic common sense. His writing style is funny and very open and honest as he takes us through the hints and tips to replicate what he’s achieved.

And how is it working for me? I’ve found it really easy to adopt some of his tips and well, 2 kilos so far and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

Ssh! Lose Weight in 20 minutes is launched on 14th March in paperback, Amazon Kindle, Kobo, iBooks and all other good formats. First to have it for pre-order are Amazon USA, Amazon UK, and Amazon Japan.

Has Colour Print On Demand (POD) Come of Age?

I was there when it all started. Colour Print On Demand (POD). In the less than glamorous surroundings of a printing exhibition (IPEX 2002), a groundbreaking machine called the Xerox iGen3 was unveiled – and many others have followed. But in 2011 is colour POD still out of the reach of book publishers?   <<read more>>

Wheels of Anarchy – Max Pemberton Thriller on International Terrorism From 1908 Reprinted

First published in 1908, Wheels of Anarchy – The Story of An Assassin was written by Max Pemberton, a friend of Arthur Conan Doyle, from notes of another friend Bertram Fletcher Robinson. Fans of James Bond should take a look at this fascinating novel which makes Bond seem a little tame. Considering it was written at the turn of the last century, the subject of international terrorism is surprisingly modern. A recent review of the reprint is published in this month’s District Messenger.

“Robinson or Pemberton may have discussed the story with their friend Conan Doyle, but the narrator, Bruce Ingersoll, is no Sherlock Holmes. Like the heroes of those other unputdownable Edwardian thrillers The Riddle of the Sands and The Thirty-Nine Steps, he’s an ordinary, decent, educated man with an adventurous streak. The peril he faces is extraordinary and strikingly modern – international terrorism. It’s a gripping tale, grippingly told” Sherlock Holmes Society of London.

The book is available from Amazon USA, Amazon UK and all good bookstores.

The Past, Present and Future of Book Publishing

A few days ago I was lucky enough to be invited to be a presenter at an ‘Authors Evening’ at the remarkable European School in Karlsruhe in Germany. The educational system abroad can be jarring in comparison to schools in the United States. Education in the States can be accused of having a more lax approach in standard and practice. Take for example the wide range of options available and even accredited college programs online, perhaps an oxymoron. So imagine my surprise when at the school I discover they teach children in five different languages

I’d been invited as two of the speakers are authors with us – Paul Spiring and Hugh Cooke who between them have published nine books with us. They are listed below. Introduced by the head of the school who in previous jobs had been both a printer and run a bookshop, the evening was a fascinating mix. Paul talked about his writings on Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes [there were several senior Sherlockians in the audience] and Hugh described himself as the ‘comic turn’, reading and performing several excerpts from his Panto For Beginners book. The other authors covered a German language novel and academic writings on ancient Italy. The combination of serious subjects with lighter elements throughout [accompanied by cheese and wine] went down very well with the 70+ attendees and has already got glowing reviews from the local press.

For the subject of the Past, Present and Future of Book Publishing I began by outlining how in the last few years the publishing world has changed beyond recognition. I then covered the product itself (books to eBooks), to the retail landscape (online, supermarkets), the publishers themselves and then through to some of the technology and exciting evolution in marketing with the arrival of social media. There are several author case studies featured as well.

The slides are available here through Slideshare.

“If your child is facing the 11+ then this book is going to make life simpler for everyone” – 11 Plus Book Review

NLP is a wonderful discipline for taking difficult subjects and making them ordered and simple and in her Engaging NLP series, Judy Bartkowiak does that very well with small handbooks. When it came to the 11+, Judy decided to collaborate with an 11+ tutor, Carol Fitzpatrick as any parent knows, the 11+ is a tough nut to crack. Response has been excellent receiving an early endorsement from 11+ specialists Chukra.
Independent book review site The Bookbag reviewed the book and gave it a hearty thumbs up [4 out of 5] commenting “If your child is facing the 11+ then this book is going to make life simpler for everyone”.

Here is the review in full.

“The 11+ process is nerve-wracking for parents and children alike and many parents find it difficult to know how best to help their child. Over-enthusiastic intervention can make a child more nervous and conscious that there’s a lot at stake, whilst leaving the child to get on with it can well make the child feel that their success or failure doesn’t matter to you. It’s also important that any preparation is built up in a steady way and that it leaves the child feeling confident of their success. ‘Passing the 11+ with NLP’ is a dual purpose book: there are the strategies for giving your child self-esteem, focus and concentration along with the other skills needed to pass and then there are details of the type of questions your child will face in the exam.

If you’re uncertain about NLP – Neuro-linguistic programming – then I’d suggest that you read the book to see what’s involved. It’s a great deal simpler and more user-friendly than that phrase might suggest. It’s about easing the pressure on your child (and yourself!) and building their self-esteem. Many children convince themselves that they’re not going to pass – and then live up to their own expectations. It’s about looking at what a child does well and then transferring those skills into the class room.

The need to be able to concentrate through the length of an exam is paramount and ideas are given for building up the length of time which a child spends concentrating. Many of the ideas are very simple, such as ensuring that the child works somewhere where they are confident that they will be able to concentrate and that they learn simple techniques like keeping one finger on the question they’re answering – which saves time they might otherwise spend looking for their place.

Children learn differently and ideas are given for establishing how best you can help your child and for avoiding outing negative thoughts about their abilities into their minds. This might sound obvious, but it’s very easy to say ‘don’t think about…’ which means that the child will think about it! There’s a lot here for the parent to think about and work on and all of it will benefit the child.

You might be surprised when you look at the type of questions your child will need to answer. They are not easy and many adults will struggle with them. What is required is not just knowledge, but mental agility and practice is the best way of developing this. Examples of the questions are given in the book along with a clear explanation of how to arrive at the answer and why it’s best done that way. Common pitfalls are pointed out and there’s advice on how to approach the questions.

If your child is facing the 11+ then this book is going to make life simpler for everyone”.

NLP 11+ is available through all good bookstores, through Amazon Kindle and through iBooks for the iPad.

The Engaging NLP series includes NLP for Parents, Children, Teachers, Back To Work, New Mums (pregnancy and childbirth) and Teens with French language editions being launched as well.
