The Bookbag Reviews Book of Advanced Driving Skills For Young Drivers Using NLP

You have probably heard it said that there are several skills that are important especially for young drivers that they don’t learn as part of passing the physical and theory driving tests. The Bookbag reviews a new NLP based book that addresses these key mental skills that scores an excellent 4/5 stars from them:

“It’s always struck me that the most difficult time for young drivers is that period just after they pass their driving test. Someone has told you that you’re an OK driver, right? But you’re out there, all on your own, without anyone to explain those odd things which you still haven’t come across or to be the extra pair of eyes. You’ve got a sense of freedom, but somehow it’s a little bit daunting. Judy Bartkowiak offers something a little bit different. It’s not another book about road signs, driving etiquette and stopping distances – it’s some ideas for getting into the right mindset to absorb the new experiences and learning some skills which might help you in other areas of your life too.

The book is based in the principles of NLP ( Neuro Linguistic Programming) – but don’t let the words put you off, not least because this isn’t a programme which is going to be pushed at you but rather the thinking which is beneath the words in the book. I found the principles of NLP most useful where they helped me to understand how I learn and even for someone many multiples of the target age group this is a skill which I can apply in other areas of my life. So – think of this book as something which will prompt you as to the ways in which you can become a better driver, but might also have applications in other areas such as exams or sport…..”

Interview with Rosie OHara, author of No More Bingo Dresses, Using NLP to cope with Breast Cancer and Other People

No More Bingo DressesFollowing the phenomenal reaction around the world to Keith Hern’s book on throat cancer and NLP (Bangers and Mash), including his appearance on ITV’s This Morning as an advocate for throat cancer awareness, the forthcoming book on NLP and breast cancer from Rosie O’Hara is eagerly awaited. Rosie is an NLP practitioner herself, so the book goes in to a lot of detail on the techniques she used.

We pinned Rosie down briefly after a weekend of training NLP Practitioners (and Belly Dancing in between she tells us) in sunny Aberdeen for a quick interview.

Why was writing No More Bingo Dresses important to you?
As a Licensed NLP Trainer I believe ‘walking my talk’ is important and sharing what I’ve done with NLP is important too. And my young friend Sam (32 and mum of 2 small children) asked me to share my then diary and my sometimes dark humour with other people.

Why is ‘coping with other people’ in the title along with ‘coping with cancer’?
Curiously I found coping with other people was more of a challenge in some ways and using my knowledge of NLP was a great way of understanding it’s not about them (or me) personally, more about their reactions and the generalised reaction to the ‘C’ word.  And NLP helped me refrain from screaming at times;)  As well as helping me to resolve issues and cope better.

Who is the book intended for?
Anyone, please anyone. I found it interesting that it was easier to get guys to review the book and write something, some women got very stuck at parts.  Guys can get breast cancer too (7 year old Leon tells you that in his Youtube Video) is one thing to bear in mind.  And 1 in 3 of us is affected by cancer in some way and those of us who have had cancer would just like someone to speak to.  And I and my young friend Sam would like more of us to talk about breast cancer and I would like people to be aware that  you don’t have to have or have had ‘cancer in the family’ – I’m the first in our family to have had cancer.

You talk a lot about that fact that you ‘had cancer’
Yes the past tense, I had cancer. Also I, in no way regard myself as a ‘survivor’ nor did I ‘battle’ – all very tiring to me.  I have a life to get on with; it was not in my plan for the year 2009.  I needed my energy for other things.

Why are Bingo Dresses in the title?
Well I’d like you to read the book and find out what a Bingo Dress is please;)  The book had 2 other titles previous to this one, the first one a couple of male friends didn’t like, the second had already been used and this title came from a conversation I did for an intro chat to ‘The Strong Breast Revolution’ a play at Edinburgh Festival in 2009 when talking to another friend Sam about boobs and also a late night conversation on we need to change the title with my friend Susan as we searched for a striking image for the cover.
Do you advocate this as alternative therapy?
Reading therapy yes!  What I did and am doing is for me.  I think everyone needs to make their own informed choice of what is right them.   I would however love all caring professionals to learn and embrace NLP listening and questioning skills, to learn about ‘Model of the World’ and ‘Rapport’ as well as skills for maintaining their own good and useful state and being aware of what impact language has on themselves and others.

So what are you doing with life now?
Using NLP to enable myself and others enhance our lives and those of others. Writing some new courses for training health care professionals, and continuing to work using NLP to develop leaders.  And most importantly continuing to enjoy life.

No More Bingo Dresses is available from all good bookstores worldwide including Amazon, via Amazon Kindle, and iBooks (for the iPad and iPhone). The book is an ideal resource for cancer patients, their family and friends and indeed NLP practitioners. The extensive glossary in the book covers all the NLP terms used, and Rosie’s frank and open style makes the book very easy to read.

You can read more about Rosie’s story in the Rosie O’Hara blog and for an introduction, check out her introductory video on YouTube. You can also contact Rosie through her website NLP Highland.

Specific Applications of NLP Proving Successful on Amazon Kindle, Kobo Books, iPad and other eBook formats

There is a lot of discussion in publishing about how books, in the era of Kindle and other ebook readers, will get smaller. They are even talking about the concept of the micro-novel to meet the demand of the reader for shorter books. In NLP when the only option was printed books there was a tendency towards general NLP books or several elements in one. Now with ebooks and indeed print on demand we see very specific books – and they are very popular.

Our first such book on a very specific area was Stop Bedwetting in 7 Days which as the title suggests tackles one very specific subject. In 2010 a master practitioner with expertise with children, Judy Bartkowiak, brought us NLP for Parents and NLP for Children and since then has added four more specialist NLP books.

As a publisher this new phenomenon is excellent as it means we can rapidly expand our author stable, in areas in which the authors have specific knowledge. It doesn’t mean that the paperback has stopped being appealing – in fact, we find a lot of practitioners have the eBook version themselves and then leave the people they are coaching with a copy of the paperback.

Although Kindle has the volume we see increased use of both Kobo Books and iBooks for iPad. Kobo are interesting as they seem to have extended geographical reach with NLP books of ours selling into Singapore, India, Australia and many other countries.

It also enables the publisher to take on very specialised books safe in the knowledge that these new formats ensure the book is widely available – take our latest book coming out in a few weeks time is ‘No More Bingo Dresses – How to use NLP to cope with breast cancer and other people – it’s a very specialist book to help people cope with the trauma of cancer.

So for NLP, publishers and ultimately NLP practitioners the evolution of eBooks is a good thing. Watch out for many more specialist titles in NLP.

“If your child is facing the 11+ then this book is going to make life simpler for everyone” – 11 Plus Book Review

NLP is a wonderful discipline for taking difficult subjects and making them ordered and simple and in her Engaging NLP series, Judy Bartkowiak does that very well with small handbooks. When it came to the 11+, Judy decided to collaborate with an 11+ tutor, Carol Fitzpatrick as any parent knows, the 11+ is a tough nut to crack. Response has been excellent receiving an early endorsement from 11+ specialists Chukra.
Independent book review site The Bookbag reviewed the book and gave it a hearty thumbs up [4 out of 5] commenting “If your child is facing the 11+ then this book is going to make life simpler for everyone”.

Here is the review in full.

“The 11+ process is nerve-wracking for parents and children alike and many parents find it difficult to know how best to help their child. Over-enthusiastic intervention can make a child more nervous and conscious that there’s a lot at stake, whilst leaving the child to get on with it can well make the child feel that their success or failure doesn’t matter to you. It’s also important that any preparation is built up in a steady way and that it leaves the child feeling confident of their success. ‘Passing the 11+ with NLP’ is a dual purpose book: there are the strategies for giving your child self-esteem, focus and concentration along with the other skills needed to pass and then there are details of the type of questions your child will face in the exam.

If you’re uncertain about NLP – Neuro-linguistic programming – then I’d suggest that you read the book to see what’s involved. It’s a great deal simpler and more user-friendly than that phrase might suggest. It’s about easing the pressure on your child (and yourself!) and building their self-esteem. Many children convince themselves that they’re not going to pass – and then live up to their own expectations. It’s about looking at what a child does well and then transferring those skills into the class room.

The need to be able to concentrate through the length of an exam is paramount and ideas are given for building up the length of time which a child spends concentrating. Many of the ideas are very simple, such as ensuring that the child works somewhere where they are confident that they will be able to concentrate and that they learn simple techniques like keeping one finger on the question they’re answering – which saves time they might otherwise spend looking for their place.

Children learn differently and ideas are given for establishing how best you can help your child and for avoiding outing negative thoughts about their abilities into their minds. This might sound obvious, but it’s very easy to say ‘don’t think about…’ which means that the child will think about it! There’s a lot here for the parent to think about and work on and all of it will benefit the child.

You might be surprised when you look at the type of questions your child will need to answer. They are not easy and many adults will struggle with them. What is required is not just knowledge, but mental agility and practice is the best way of developing this. Examples of the questions are given in the book along with a clear explanation of how to arrive at the answer and why it’s best done that way. Common pitfalls are pointed out and there’s advice on how to approach the questions.

If your child is facing the 11+ then this book is going to make life simpler for everyone”.

NLP 11+ is available through all good bookstores, through Amazon Kindle and through iBooks for the iPad.

The Engaging NLP series includes NLP for Parents, Children, Teachers, Back To Work, New Mums (pregnancy and childbirth) and Teens with French language editions being launched as well.

The Lancet – Oncology – Reviews Throat Cancer and NLP Book

“Hern excellently describes living with cancer.” The Lancet

We mentioned in a previous article that our proudest moment as a publisher came with Keith Hern’s appearance as an advocate for a mouth cancer charity on ITV’s This Morning and the recent review in The Lancet came very close as well. The Lancet is the most revered of medical journals and to even get considered important enough for a review is an honour. Below are comments and extracts from the long review which appears in Volume 11, December 2010.

Bangers and Mash charts Keith’s battle against throat cancer with the help of NLP and the review is glowing on how well Keith describes that journey.

“Hern excellently describes living with cancer – working out how to tell family and friends, and combining everyday life with the endless hospital appointments, scans, and blood tests. Hern uses italics to express his thoughts and differentiate them from what he actually says to medical staff, on the whole this effectively communicates the “daily turmoil” of what is actually going on behind his clichéd brave face”.

Several hospitals, including the Royal Marsden where Keith was treated are using the book with patients. A recent comment from a team leader there reaffirms the Lancet’s comments;

“Yesterday, I was in a research session looking at the role of acupuncture to resolve dryness of the mouth after radiotherapy. There were about six participants during the session and while they got all these needles stuck on them, one of the patients talked about your book. He said that he thoroughly enjoyed reading your book and that it gave him reassurance that he was not alone in what he had gone through.”

That seems to be a key role for the book that is born out in dozens of testimonials from around the world. The frankness and honesty combined with the level of detail on the process he went through is helping lots of patients – facing all types of cancers. One patient fed back;

“Had an amazing day today met the team of docs and nurses who are going to make me better, they could not believe how happy and positive I was. I know our cancers are both different but i didn’t stop talking about your book ….and how step by step it helped me understand so much.  I never knew what pet and ct scans where or radio therapy was but your book told me not only what it does but how it feels which most docs dont know because they have never had it done”

The Lancet article also comments on how helpful Keith’s photography throughout the book is in painting the picture for cancer patients.

“The photographic diary of his cancer treatment is a more interesting and effective way of illustrating his treatment that using words alone, and generally this photographic approach works very well”.

The articles echos at the end the sentiment of many readers of the book;

“Bangers and Mash is a very personal look at the day-to-day reality of coping with cancer and the positive outcome of Hern’s treatment makes it an uplifting read”.

As one doctor’s review on Amazon says, it is a must read for all doctors, cancer sufferers and their families. Bangers and Mash is available from all good bookstores, Amazon Kindle and iBooks for the iPad. More on Keith’s battle in the Daily Mail article comparing his fight with that of Michael Douglas.

What Is The Most Loved NLP Book In The World? It’s The Most Hated One. Should it be renamed the Marmite Guide to NLP?

There is a vegetable spread called Marmite which plays on the fact that people either love it or hate it. On TV adverts people gush about it, or end up hitting the poor man inside the giant Marmite jar. Such has been the reaction to Going Mental, the new NLP coaching book from Jakob Lovstad. People either love it, or they hate it – nothing in between.

It should not have been a surprise for us as a publisher. The author himself warned us when we first read the manuscript that some of his views could be considered ‘harsh’ and indeed when one of the founders of NLP, John Grinder,  reviewed the book [his review appears on the back of the book in full] he echoed Jakob’s words that opinion on the book would be polarised. Grinder did say that the book was a must read for all NLP practitioners as it prompts people to look at things in a different way – you may not agree with Jakob’s opinions [on things like religion for example] but you simply cannot argue with his results.

Going Mental is in the author’s own words an alternative to all the ‘pat on the back’ type motivational coaching that has become the norm in NLP. Jakob trains MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters for a living, and he’s not a bad fighter in his own right. One reviewer of his book comments that when not achieving your goal means a foot in your neck you’d better get your coaching right – and this is how Jakob approaches NLP, with a kind of zero tolerance for failure. It’s this bluntness and lack of nurture that is one source of the ‘haters’. Another is quite simply more rooted in snobbery – that an MMA fighter can write an NLP coaching book has annoyed some of the hierarchy of NLP. One review on Amazon starts “I haven’t read the book, but……” and its this positioning that is way off.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Jakob in Stockholm (he’s from Norway so a short jump across to Sweden was a good place to meet up) to interview him ahead of the launch. I’ll admit that first impressions go along with the tough man persona – he’s deceptively big coming in at around 2 metres tall and with a fully shaved head he strikes a very intimidating figure. He later explained the lack of hair was due to the ‘no rules’ version of MMA they have in the Nordics where even hair grabbing is allowed.

The minute Jakob engages you in conversation though you see straight away what a highly intelligent and articulate man he is. In addition to being university educated at the Norwegian equivalent of MIT, he also did several years of a doctorate before the opportunities in MMA drew him away. In his book he explains the life changing introduction he had to NLP coaching. Following a terrible defeat his coach, blaming his lack of mental preparation, sent an injured Jakob to an NLP coach and he’s never looked back. He began adding NLP into the coaching of his fighters and found that physically and mentally trained fighters did so much better in the cage. He then started to apply the same techniques in his business coaching – and that’s where it really started to get interesting.

Entrepreneurs and business leaders, to be successful, display many of the characteristics of an MMA fighter, and Jakob has tapped into that. Drive, determination and critically preparedness play a big part in being successful – not just in business, but also in life Jakob argues. Before NLP Jakob admits he wasn’t a particularly nice person to know – post NLP he is more centred, has a long term partner [instead of the playboy he was before playing off his MMA fame] and is enjoying life a lot more. These days his time is split between mostly working with business people to still being involved with MMA.

If you want to comment on his book direct to his face [and are brave enough to do so] then in the spirit of openness that runs throughout his work Jakob has a Going Mental Facebook Page. It does have some of the top MMA fighters in the world as fans though, so make sure your comments are constructive.

Going Mental is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Amazon Kindle, iBooks for the iPad and iPhone and all other good bookstores.

Meeting the NLP Practitioner and coach that also happens to be a leading MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Fighter

Going Mental

There are few more fascinating author  interviews I’ve conducted over the years than my meeting with Jakob Lovstad, author of ‘Going Mental – Reaching your Goals in Business and Sports – Full Contact NLP Coaching From a Full Contact Fighter. We met in a very cold and snowy Stockholm and chatted about the book, his coaching and his fighting. Jakob is in the top 10 Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters in Europe, a fighting coach and now NLP practitioner and business coach.

Physically Jakob is a big guy. Around 2 metres tall and he fights in the light heavyweight class. With his hair shaven close to his scalp – having hair is a potential weakness in some classes of MMA where hair grabbing is allowed – he cuts a pretty intimidating figure. As soon as he begins to talk you realise that behind this tough exterior lies a very intelligent and articulate coach. He may ply his trade knocking seven bells out of his counterparts in the ring, but the key to his and the fighters he trains success is born out of NLP. Don’t tell anyone, as it may affect his “Striking Viking” persona in the cage, but this is one very clever guy. Jakob went to the Norwegian equivalent of MIT and spent 4 years working on his PHD before he made the unusual move into MMA.

Jakob was introduced to NLP by a coach following a disastrous fight in which a cocky and arrogant (his own words) Lovstad went into the ring injured and wholly mentally unprepared. After a very bad and humiliating beating he spent much of the recovery time learning NLP which proved a revelation for him. Jakob realised the potential to add NLP based preparation to a fighters training and set about building a program for MMA fighters.  The results have been excellent with the program creating top fighters that are also mentally prepared for their fights. Jakob saw the natural transition to bring the techniques into the business world and now works with business leaders with a no-nonsense coaching philosophy and interesting offers a ‘no-change, no-fee’ deal to his clients. A very unique type of business coach.

John Grinder, co-founder of NLP agrees that Jakob is a very unusual case;

“Consider, however the context – while I could well be wrong, I doubt that many of the professional full contact fighters concern themselves about such philosophical issues as the possibility of objectivity, the distinction between reality and experience, the issue of whether life has meaning or is it that we simply create the meaning in our lives. Jakob does. And this makes for a lively insight into this very special world.”

Whilst some of the philosophies Jakob puts across will no doubt be controversial [he advocates a ‘personal religion’ rather than subscribing to any of the traditional religions for example] Grinder goes on to say how in fact Jakob’s work is a great demonstration of NLP

“NLP (especially New Code NLP) has as its focus the extraordinary, the genius, in whatever field of endeavor. Here is a narrative about its consequences embodied in a cage fighter – have a look – the patterns are perfectly applicable to what you do as well as what Jakob does.”

My favourite comment on Jakob’s concept of ‘full contact NLP’ comes from Jorgen Rasmussen:

“Despite the fact that I disagree strongly with some of his philosophy, Jakob’s results using NLP patterning to become a high achiever in the toughest sport on earth speaks for itself. When the consequences of your ideas not working properly is a shin to the neck, you are pretty much forced to find out what actually works and what is B.S.”

Jakob still fights, with his next major bout coming up in March and he insists this helps him with his business clients. It is a strong demonstration that the techniques he is applying with them are similar to those he is using before stepping into the cage with some of the world’s leading MMA fighters. Jakob uses the phrase “battle tested” for his methods and he’s very passionate about what he sees as a ‘regurgitation bandwagon’ with several writers simply re-hashing the original NLP principles – and on that point he has a lot of supporters.

So the consensus is that Going Mental is a very valid, interesting and valuable contribution to the overall NLP field – even if you don’t agree with some of the strong views expressed within. One thing is for sure, the next few months as his publisher is going to be an interesting ride.

Going Mental is available through all good bookstores, on Amazon Kindle, Kobo Books and iBooks (iPad and iPhone). To contact Jakob about speaking at an event (he’s very good in front of large audiences) visit his website www.allconfidence.com.
