Review of Sherlock Holmes and The London Particular

“Daniel D. Victor has made a name for himself by bringing us some really great Sherlock Holmes stories in his ongoing series, “Sherlock Holmes and the American Literati”. These books feature encounters between Holmes and famous American writers, including “The Final Page of Baker Street” (Raymond Chandler), “The Baron of Brede Place” (Stephen Crane), “Seventeen Minutes to Baker Street” (Samuel Clemens), and “The Outrage at the Diogenes Club” (Jack London). Now, in “Sherlock Holmes and the London Particular”, he gives us Holmes’s fascinating encounter with Richard Harding Davis, a famed American reporter and novelist at the turn of the twentieth century.

The novel begins by throwing us in the thick of the action – Holmes and Watson, in a dense London fog, see an open door. They enter the building and find themselves immediately involved in a murder investigation. From there, the action only gets more exciting, with a stolen necklace, foreign intrigue, a problem with an inheritance, and a curious group known as “The High Table Club”.

As usual, the appearance of a new novel by Dan Victor is cause for Sherlockian celebration. Run – don’t walk – to dive into this one!“

The Hound of The Baskervilles: A Sherlock Holmes Play

“The Hound of Baskervilles doesn’t easily lend itself to the theatre, but dramatists seem unable to resist the challenge. I’ve not had the chance to see it performed, but Simon Corble’s play is pretty close to the top of my list of favourites. It was written to be performed out of doors, with the audience following the actors from place to place. Mr Corble boldly adapts the story rather than simply dramatising, and the result is clever, witty, exciting – and refreshingly intelligent. David Stuart Davies contributes an appreciative foreword, and the text is enhanced by a dozen photographs and superb atmospheric cover, using photos taken during a production at Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire.”  – The Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Holmes and Watson The War Years – A special hardback edition including all three bestselling Sherlock Holmes novels from Kieran McMullen

It was the time of Queen Victoria’s “Little Wars” and the “War to End All Wars”. It was also the time of Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson. Watson, the man, would be formed by his experiences in the British “Second Afghan War”, before he ever met Sherlock Holmes in an adventure, he would record this experience as Watson’s Afghan Adventure, a tale of war and mystery. Later, Holmes and Watson would go on to not only share the problems of crime solving, Watson’s three marriages, a purported tragedy at Reichenbach, and Holmes’s return from the dead; they would also share two more wartime experiences. In Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Boer Wagon, they are called on by Mycroft Holmes and the British government to go to the battleground of South Africa. Their mission is to stop the flow of army secrets to the Boers and try to recover a King’s ransom in gold. By the time of their third great wartime adventure the two friends are retired, but Mycroft, and the government, need them once more as they are called on in Sherlock Holmes and the Irish Rebels. Holmes and Watson had already foiled the plans of a German espionage ring at the start of the Great War in the tale Watson called “His Last Bow.” But it was not, in reality, Holmes’s last bow. Holmes and Watson are sent now to the little war within a war, the killing fields of Dublin in 1916 and the Irish Rebellion. Can they stop it? And can they stop the plans of a renegade member of the Dublin Metropolitan Police?

This impressive collection of Kieran McMullens work was worth every penny!! A beautiful book, never mind the brilliance that is written inside! You really feel like you’re there with the infamous duo on the frontline in these war torn countries. Mysteries, action, my rift and tension all adds up to create a trio of enigmatic brilliance!” – Ben Cardall

Holmes and Watson The War Years is available from all good bookstores including  Amazon USABarnes and Noble USA,  Amazon UKWaterstones UK, and for free shipping worldwide Book Depository .

A Scandal in Bohemia

Sheldon Goldfarb's avatarSherlockian Musings

Irene Adler and her two grooms. Illustration by Sidney Paget.

Another excerpt from my book, a musing about the first short story in the canon, the story of the woman, Irene Adler, and the scandal she almost caused.

A Scandal in Bohemia

Never
to return:
That’s what we learn of Irene
Adler. She’s left England, never to
return. She has this one brilliant turn
in “A Scandal in Bohemia,” and then is gone – poof! – never to be seen
again. (Except in countless pastiches,
adaptations, and the fantasies of Sherlockians.) I shouldn’t make that a mere parenthesis,
though: it raises a big question: Why the fascination with this opera singer
from New Jersey?

New
Jersey?
Yes, I know, how can that be
right? Here she is, the one woman who
can outsmart Sherlock Holmes, and she comes from New Jersey. One’s class snobbery rises – and perhaps that
is…
