Review of The Mystery of the Scarlet Homes of Sherlock

If you stumbled upon the lost diaries of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, what would you do with them? Sanibel author, Dr. John Raffensperger, a collector of Sherlockiana, came up with an idea. He imagined placing a bid at Sotheby’s to win an old footlocker from the estate of Doyle. Following through with this fictional idea, he discovered three leather bound hand-written journals which he turned over to Professor Richard Krevolin. In truth, Krevolin, a screenwriter, playwriter and novelist, read an article written by Raffensperger, published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery, titled, “Was the Real Sherlock Holmes a Pediatric Surgeon?”     Krevolin suggested they combine talents and pen a novel based on Dr. Joseph Bell and Arthur Conan Doyle, who was his clerk. This book is the result of their efforts.

The book chronicles Doyle’s clerkship with Bell, a renowned surgeon who was the model for Doyle’s great detective, Sherlock Holmes. At the time, Doyle was a 19 year old medical student at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Along the way, they encounter Robert Louis Stevenson, Allen Pinkerton and Rev Henry Ward Beecher, whose sister authored Uncle Toms Cabin.   There are several other interesting characters.

Do the names Captain Hook, Jesse James and Dr. Jekyl ring a bell?  Their journey begins September 25, 1878 and continues through December 10, 1878. During that short period of time the pair travel to America where they are involved in solving a string of grisly and mysterious murders.

Bell has uncanny powers of observation as to medical ailments, backgrounds of patients and solving the murders.  Doyle learns a great deal from him. During the 1800’s medical students had a hard time finding cadavers upon which to work to learn more about the human body. Although it was illegal, gravediggers often helped out by providing bodies.

Once Bell discovers the string of homicides, he places everyone in great danger. As he often said, ‘the game was afoot.’ Pinkerton, of the famous detective agency, is enlisted to help out. As Doyle writes in his journal, he questions his decision. “What have I gotten myself into?  When Bell asked me to accompany him I should have flatly refused. Aye, my family is poor, but back in Scotland I was safe and happy and my stomach was always full. And no one was trying to kill me. Maybe I am not cut out for a life of adventure, after all.

During their murder investigation they come across a startling fact. The thyroid gland has been removed from each body. As they solve the mystery they are thrown into a conspiracy involving an assassination of the president. The book is filled with murder, literary history and humanity. If you are a Sherlock Homes fan, The Mystery of the Scarlet Homes of Sherlock is a must read. It is available online through MX Publishing or Amazon.

Out today – Benedict Cumberbatch: London and Hollywood

Benedict Cumberbatch’s career is built to last. From his early success as a working actor through his dynamic trajectory to international star, Cumberbatch continues to be one of the best thespians of his generation. Those who know Cumberbatch primarily because of his award-winning star turn as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s Sherlock know only a fraction of the actor’s noteworthy professional history, including such critically acclaimed roles as, on television, Hawking, Small Island, To the Ends of the Earth, Parade’s End, and The Hollow Crown; on stage, Hedda Gabler, After the Dance, Frankenstein, and Hamlet; on radio, Cabin Pressure and Neverwhere; and on film, Atonement, War Horse, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and The Imitation Game. Whether starring on television, stage, or radio in home base London or filming a Hollywood production, Benedict Cumberbatch continues to choose interesting roles that cement his A-list status. His career is not without occasional controversy, but, like those he admires most in London or Hollywood, he has become savvy about the entertainment industry. Benedict Cumberbatch is here to stay in the spotlight—to the delight of anyone who appreciates fine acting.

Benedict Cumberbatch: London and Hollywood is available from all good bookstores including The Strand Magazine, Amazon USA, Amazon UK and for free shipping worldwide Book Depository. In ebook format it is in Kindle.

Review of Sherlock Holmes and A Hole in The Devil’s Tail

I found the story to be a nice little mystery. There are twists, turns, and trails that run cold. A number of suspects are mentioned, and Holmes weighs the evidence with a scale that can find differences in weight to a microscopic degree. For Holmes the Devil is in the details which might just point back to a hole in the Devil’s Tail…

Released this week – Sherlock Holmes and the Nine-Dragon Sigil

It’s the year 1906. Rumours abound that a deadly plot is hatching – not in the fog-ridden back-alleys of London’s Limehouse district or the sinister Devon moors of the Hound of the Baskervilles but in faraway Peking. Holmes’s task – discover whether such a plot exists and if so, foil it. But are the assassins targeting the young and progressive Ch’ing Emperor or his imperious aunt, the fearsome Empress Dowager Cixi? The murder of either could spark a civil war. The fate of China and the interests of Britain’s vast Empire in the Orient could be at stake. Holmes and Watson take up the mission with their customary confidence – until they find they are no longer in the familiar landscapes of Edwardian England. Instead, they tumble into the Alice In Wonderland world of the Forbidden City.

Sherlock Holmes and The Nine-Dragon Sigil is available from all good bookstores including The Strand Magazine, Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Waterstones UK and for free shipping worldwide Book Depository. In ebook format it is in Kindle.

Benedict Cumberbatch: London and Hollywood – Guest blog from Lynnette Porter

The Cover

One of the interesting parts of writing a book is having input on the cover. In my case, MX Publishing and I select and buy a photograph that can be used as part of the cover design. For a couple of days early in the writing process, I looked at every public photograph of Benedict Cumberbatch I could find. The one I favoured—that was affordable—came from the BFI London Film Festival in 2014, when The Imitation Game was selected as the opening film.

The original photo included an umbrella, a must-have accessory on the red carpet that rainy night. Benedict Cumberbatch looked so pleased as the photographer took this shot. The lights highlighted his face, illustrating that he and his work were in the spotlight. He also was looking to the viewer’s right. On a cover, that symbolises looking ahead or toward the future, and the emphasis of this book is his career now and in the future because of his body of work. I chose this photograph because of his expression, the lighting, and the direction he faced.

I also chose this occasion because he starred in the festival’s opening film—an especially prestigious occasion—and because he earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as Alan Turing. The photo therefore references both London and Hollywood—a perfect combination for this book. Although in October 2014, when the film festival featured The Imitation Game, the actor could not know that he would be nominated for an Oscar, in retrospect, the photo shows his pleasure at his and the film’s recognition, not because of the nominations he would receive for that role. In this photo, Benedict Cumberbatch is on the cusp of major Hollywood recognition, but he is savouring the moment in his native London.

Of course, the design was not complete with the selection of a photograph. The wonderful Jules Coomber, who designed the previous two amazing covers of the Cumberbatch performance biographies, added the backdrop of a London cityscape and part of the Hollywood sign (and removed the umbrella) to further illustrate Benedict Cumberbatch’s career aspirations and successes in both London and Hollywood.

The Content

This is the third book I have written about Benedict Cumberbatch, and it can be read as the latest update on his career and stardom supplementing the previous books or as a standalone volume. By now, some people may be wondering what else I could possibly have to write about this actor. Because he has been so prolific in multiple media—radio, television, film, theatre—there is always something new to critique.

In Benedict Cumberbatch: London and Hollywood, I summarized the actor’s previous performances, so that new readers can get the full perspective on the Cumberbatch back catalogue. However, I also encountered new sources that provide more details about the actor’s preparation or behind-the-scenes issues that cropped up during, for example, the run of Frankenstein. Even in sections about performances that may be familiar to readers of the previous two books, there is a new focus on how each performance has attributed to his success or how it reflects his London or Hollywood stardom.

More important, the majority of the book analyses Benedict Cumberbatch’s more recent performances in Hamlet, The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses, The Imitation Game(which was not in general release at the time the previous book was published), “The Abominable Bride” special episode of Sherlock, and, of course, Doctor Strange. Some works receive a whole chapter, but all receive many pages of discussion.

Stardom involves more than acting. The book also looks at Benedict Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch production company, his changing public persona, his philanthropy, and his interactions with fandom. In short, Benedict Cumberbatch: London and Hollywood looks at the development of a new international star and the resulting changes to his public persona and career, as well as the new opportunities now afforded him.

I am pleased with the cover and contents of this book, and I hope readers will enjoy the critiques and commentary about this most talented actor.

Review of The Vatican Cameos

“… The story is crafted not only in the style of Sherlock’s creator, but rife with all the trappings, starting with the character traits of Holmes and Watson and their procedural approach to problem solving, on to the imaginative means of maneuvering around inevitable hurdles, and down to minutia that makes the storytelling indisputably authentic…

Ryan has captured not only Holmes’ voice but the pattern of his thinking process and logic, and the mystery is laced with an abundance of Holmes’ trademark characteristics and arcane knowledge. (Holmes displaying an encyclopedic knowledge of the Vatican’s architecture, for instance.)

At the story’s center is a papal primer that provides the reader with a cultural history of the political struggle between Church and State.

Watson’s narrative perfectly captures Holmes’ arrogance and trademark knowledge of the obscure. Once you’ve read “The Vatican Cameos,” you’ll find yourself eager awaiting the next in Ryan’s series.

As am I.
