Philp K Jones Reviews Sherlock Holmes Tales From The Strangers Room

Sherlock Holmes Tales From The Strangers Room“It is completely impossible that all readers will fail to find at least one view that strikes a chord within their mind that says, “of course!  That was the real Holmes (or Watson).”

Philip K Jones is one of the most experienced Holmes reviewers in the world and maintains the world’s largest database of pastiches. He was particularly keen to review Sherlock Holmes and The Strangers Room as it contains more than forty short ‘pastiches’ which Phil nicely refers to as ‘moments’ rather than mysteries. This is a fascinating collection that we savoured the first time we read it and we agree with Phil that some of them are an excellent insight into the true Holmes and Watson.

“This is a collection of Sherlockian items that were originally published on the Internet.  Some of them have been revised for this publication and some remain in their original forms.  In contrast to the usual Sherlockian anthology, this book is an assembly of fragments.  Each item is complete and entire, but they mostly catch moments, not stories.  Some are complete mysteries, with villains to catch and investigations to be performed, but, mostly, they are visions of Holmes and Watson, along with Mrs. Hudson, Inspector Lestrade and the irregulars at particular moments.  Some of these moments are quite important, but that is all they are, moments.

A number of these items center on Christmases, mostly those following Holmes’ return from the Great Hiatus.  In general, the entire collection celebrates the change of Holmes into a human being.  His boyhood is suggested as lonely and neglected with Mycroft as his only real human contact.  His association with Watson is depicted as the source of his growing humanity and these tales seem to capture the moments he sees other people as more than simply data to be integrated into his catalogue of human activities.

Many of the items are authored by the editor, David Ruffle.  He confines himself, mostly, to short pieces and to the area of Puns.  Two of his creations are presented, both of which easily merit inclusion in any collection of Sherlockian narrative puns, if such can ever be published.  Poems are also included.  These are strictly outside my areas of expertise, but I do concede that they definitely convey impressions of the individuals they portray.

This collection is definitely not a group of Sherlockian mysteries.  Instead, it is a series of more than forty small peeks at Holmes, Watson and the standard Doyle dramatis personae that are not afforded by the Canon.  It is possible that readers may dislike or consider some of the views to be silly.  It is completely impossible that all readers will fail to find at least one view that strikes a chord within their mind that says, “of course!  That was the real Holmes (or Watson).”  Further, readers may encounter a few old friends along the way.”

Sherlock Holmes Tales From The Strangers Room is available through all good independent booksellers including Classic Specialities and the Mysterious Bookshop (NY) as as well Amazon and in all electronic formats such as Amazon Kindle.

Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews A Professor Reflects on Sherlock Holmes

A Professor Reflects On Sherlock Holmes“This professor is the sort of teacher who makes learning a pleasure.”

Marino Alvarez’s A Professor Reflects on Sherlock Holmes is a fascinating collection of essays and writings about Sherlock Holmes. In their current newsletter, The Sherlock Holmes Society of London reviews this new book.

“The title of A Professor Reflects on Sherlock Holmes by Marino C Alvarez (MX Publishing; £9.99/ $16.95/ €12.99) deliberately echoes that of A Doctor Enjoys Sherlock Holmes by Edward J Van Liere. The twelve
essays make you think, but they also entertain you.

Dr Alvarez compares the writing styles of Watson and Holmes, but stresses that only the reader can say which was the better storyteller. He considers Holmes’s potential as a teacher and as an academic. He distinguishes between the logical and the empirical.

In the second section, Dr Alvarez follows Holmes to Meiringen and the Reichenbach Falls, and then visits Trinity College, Oxford, preceding the Society’s time there by a month. This professor is the sort of teacher who makes learning a pleasure. I’m sorry our visits didn’t coincide!”

A Professor Reflects On Sherlock Holmes is available through all good bookstores including Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Barnes and Noble USA with advanced copies available from The Mysterious Bookshop and Classic Specialities.

Britain’s Television Queen – A Different Kind of Diamond Jubilee Book

In this extraordinary and delightfully surprising book about the 60-year television history of Queen Elizabeth II, there are stars of television, television satire, entertainment, film, the art world, sport, pop music, politics and television science, including the following, all of whom relate to Bob Crew’s fascinating social and television royal history, in one way or other : Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill, Harold Wilson, Tony Blair, David Cameron, Margaret Thatcher, Enoch Powell, Boris Yeltsin, Logie Baird, Michael Faraday, the Beatles, John Lennon, Julian Lennon, Paul McCartney, Heather Mills, Spike Milligan, John Cleese, Peter Cook, The Pythons, Barry Humphries, David Frost, David Beckham, Vinny Jones, Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Ant and Dec, Piers Morgan, David Attenborough, Eamonn Andrews, Barbara Kelly, Shakespeare, Princess Diana, Dodi Fayyad, Prince William and Prince Harry, Prince Charles and Camilla, Princess Anne, Helen Mirren, Jacques Cousteau, Andrew Marr, John Humphrys, John McEnroe, David Dimbleby and Richard Dimbleby to mention but a few.

This is not your usual bog-standard Diamond Jubilee book – duplicating the same old story as all the duplicating others – on the contrary it really is a stand-alone Diamond Jubilee book that is uniquely and refreshingly different, with a broad brush, and something for everybody in its pages. This really is a ‘party at the palace’ book in more ways than one. Bob Crew has assembled a huge and colourful cast of characters with which to tell his story, a goodly number of whom he has known and/or had occasion to work with.

Also included is a wonderful chapter on Queen Elizabeth’s pictures through history on stamps – including many beautiful examples of stamps from around the world.

Social media (including Facebook) threat to adopted children grows in UK

Adoption and NLP expert Helen Oakwater’s new book, Bubble Wrapped Children, released this week, has generated a worldwide storm lifting the lid on a major crisis within adoption.

Reuters, The Times (in a front page article), The Sun, The Australian, The Daily Mail are among dozens of major media outlets that carried features on Thursday and Friday.

Helen also appeared on SKY News and ITV’s Daybreak interviews.

Here is the SKY News interview.

Below is an extract the article from Reuters.

Reuters – LONDON | Thu Jan 5, 2012.

British youngsters adopted after abusive childhoods are at risk of fresh emotional turmoil as some birth parents turn to Facebook and other social networking sites to track them down, adoption agencies said on Thursday. The ease with which birth parents can use technology to get in touch with their children without warning and without following established safeguards has alarmed adoption agencies.

Families who have been contacted have described the experience as like being in a “slow motion car crash” leaving them “battered and bruised.” Some families have been torn apart. “Social networking sites have blown things open — you can’t keep things secret,” said Julia Feast, consultant at the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), which campaigns for children in care.

“It really unsettles the whole family,” she told Reuters. “It’s like a bomb being thrown inside it and you don’t know how you are going to pull the pieces together again if children are not being prepared.”

Under British law, birth parents cannot access the adoption records of their children and usually, in the days before social networking, it was very difficult for them to make contact.

Since 2005, adopted adults and their birth relatives have had the legal right to ask for intermediary services from an approved agency to help them make contact with each other, but this can be turned down if there are concerns following an assessment.

It is not known how many birth parents are using social networking sites to get around this, but the BAAF said it was receiving “more and more cases.”

Living With The Naga Headhunting Tribes – Interview with Bea Andersen Swedien

“Imagine waking up to the rustle of a jungle wind and the howling of monkeys. Imagine a place where morning coffee doesn’t come from Starbucks and the nearest doctor is a three-day hike away, longer if it rains.

Imagine navigating your way down a trail — where a hungry leopard could be lying in wait — just to use the bathroom.

Imagine cobras, man-eating tigers and neighbors who decorate their homes with the human skulls they hollowed out the night before.”

Extract from a Fascinating interview with Bea Swedien

Under the red blanket is available from all good bookstores including Amazon and Barnes and Noble and in all formats including Amazon Kindle, and in full colour (simply stunning) on iTunes for the iPad.

Sherlock Holmes and The Irish Rebels – It is 1916 and the world is at war

“Exciting and full of authentic military detail”

That’s how the Sherlock Holmes Society of London described Kieran McMullen’s first novel ‘Watson’s Afghan Adventure‘ published in January and the book has received rave reviews from around the world.

McMullen now turns his focus squarely on Holmes in ‘Sherlock Holmes and The Irish Rebels’. It is early 1916 and the world is at war. Sherlock Holmes is well into his spy persona as Altamont following the capture of the German spy Von Bork at the opening of the Great War. Watson is called to London by Mycroft Holmes and is asked to join Sherlock, who has infiltrated the Irish Volunteers. War within the United Kingdom could deal a decisive blow to the war effort and Holmes must find out the rebels plans, and if possible, stop the rebellion which appears imminent. He has need of Watson once again.

The same level of detail is applied as with the first book. Taking from the review of Watson’s Afghan Adventure;

Kieran McMullen, author of Watson’s Afghan Adventure is a former professional soldier and a specialist in American military history – an appropriate person to tell of Watson’s experiences as an army surgeon.”

Watson's Afghan AdventureAward winning Holmes historian Alistair Duncan recently commented on his Sherlokian Blog;

“The author is a former US Army officer and his military background and knowledge of the Afghan campaign shine through in the rich detail that he offers us in the story”.

Kieran’s own blog is becoming very popular – especially his recent series of articles on the different actors that have played Dr.Watson.

Sherlock Holmes and The Irish Rebels has already been picked up for pre-order at Book Depository (free worldwide delivery), Amazon UK, and Amazon USA and will follow through all bookstores and in all formats.

Watson’s Afghan Adventure is available from all good bookstores and on Amazon Kindle, Kobo Books, iBooks (iPad and iPhone) and other formats.

Sherlock Holmes Society of London Reviews The London of Sherlock Holmes

“As a step-by-step guide to the London of the Canon, it’s unbeatable”

As publishers we don’t like to overuse the word ‘epic’ but its the only way we can describe Thomas Wheeler’s quite amazing new book ‘The London of Sherlock Holmes’. Tom first launched a book a decade ago with 200 Holmes locations featured and this year the third version of his book has a staggering 400 locations.

“Thomas Bruce Wheeler has devoted much time and energy to researching our capital city. After 2009’s admirable The New Finding Sherlock’s London comes The London of Sherlock Holmes (MX Publishing; http://www.mxpublishing.com; £13.99/$22.95/€17.99), which updates the earlier book to a degree that no other guide, I think, has seriously considered. As before, we’re directed to more than 300 sites, each of whose significance is clearly and pithily stated. You can visit the locations of a specific adventure, explore the sites near each of a hundred railway or Underground stations, or take any of six walking tours in the footsteps of Holmes and Watson. But The London of Sherlock Holmes is ideally used in its e-book format where the map references are hyperlinked to Google Maps and over 400 photographs. As a step-by-step guide to the London of the Canon, it’s unbeatable.”

The London of Sherlock Holmes is available from all good book stores like Amazon, Barnes and Noble in paperback and in electronic versions such as Barnes and Noble Nook , Amazon Kindle and iBooks (iPad).

Philip K Jones Reviews The Case of The Russian Chessboard a Sherlock Holmes Mystery

Philip K Jones (aka The Ill Dressed Vagabond) is one of the USA’s most respected Holmes reviewers and maintains a huge database of Holmes pastiches and fiction.

Here is his review of The Case of The Russian Chessboard;

“This is a short novel set in the late 19th Century in London.  Holmes and Watson are drawn into an investigation of Russian revolutionaries plotting and recruiting among London’s Liberals.  It brings them into the world of plot and counterplot, agent and counteragent that set the standards for 20th Century Social Commentary.  The Emigrés and the Okhrana define the moves and relations followed by all the various Patriots vs. Secret Police From the October Revolution through the careers of Pol Pot and Idi Amin.  This dance began during the Reign of Peter the Great and, in 200 years, the participants learned their roles well.  Their examples through the Russian Revolution trained another hundred years of artists of abominations.

This is Sherlock Holmes working on a World stage, with despair and misery playing the tune and ambition calling the moves.  It is a dark and unpleasant tale, with few triumphs and little to cheer about.  Holmes makes no brilliant deductions and no knighthood is awaiting him in The Service of the Crown.   The lessons are all bloody and terrible and the victims are pitiful and miserable.  How sadly and typically Russian!  The truly sad thing about this story is that could well have been true.

Holmes accepts a plea from a gentlewoman to help her sister who has become enmeshed in a nihilist organization’s plot.  As part of the investigation, Holmes visits an old acquaintance living on a pacifist commune in rural Essex.  He and Watson are also offered work in St. Petersburg by the London head of the Okhrana and witness the murder of a revolutionary hero in Regent’s Park. Untangling the ins and outs of the matter is a commentary on the methods used by both sides and the struggles to be faced in the dawning Century.

The editing is quite good with only one or two errors apparent.  The writing is dark and the mystery is, unfortunately, fairly easy to penetrate.  The most depressing thing about the book is how true it is to life and the times”.

The Case of the Russian Chessboard is now out in paperback on Amazon USA, Amazon UK, and through all good bookstores. The book is also available on Amazon Kindle and all other ebook formats.

No Police Like Holmes debut novel from bestselling Sherlock Holmes author Dan Andriacco

Dan Andriacco’s first book in June this year has been a big hit with Holmes fans around the world and the blog of the same name Baker Street Beat has thousands of visitors. Dan refers to both as ‘various Sherlockian scribblings and ramblings’ and the book’s mix of pastiches, radio plays, articles and stories written in the style of a highly articulate fan, is the only book we have that only has 5 star reviews on Amazon, eleven of them at time of writing. What will be interesting is to see the reaction of his growing Holmesian fan base when they read this, his debut novel, and realise that the target of both the murderer, and Dan’s sharp wit, is Holmes fans themselves.

Set in a small town in America that is hosting a major Sherlockian event, Dan captures the essence of Holmes mania and weaves into a murder mystery an extremely funny look at Sherlockians. You will certainly recognise several of the characters and may even see a bit (or a lot) of yourself in one of them. The ‘hero’ of the story, Jeff Cody, is faced with several Sherlockians as murder suspects and competes with his brother-in-law Sebastian to solve the mystery.

Especially as it’s his first stab at a full length novel, Dan has had some help from leading Holmesians on going through the book, and the way he paints the obsessive Holmes fans has been described as “spot on”. As Dan says on the book’s back cover,

“This satirical romp takes Sherlock Holmes seriously, but not Holmesians”.

Lets not forget that this is as much a self-reflection as anything, and in fact you could argue the book is semi-autobiographical. So is No Police Like Holmes like looking in the mirror for Dr.Dan? The grinning photo of Andriacco adorned with deer stalker and magnifying glass on the back cover certainly suggests that.

We’re sure Holmes fans will react with the same passion as they have done to Baker Street Beat –

“If you don’t read any other Holmes pastiche this year, please, please read the short story The Peculiar Persecution of John Vincent Harden which has to be the closest in tone and content to a Holmes work that I have read in a long time.”

“Andriacco’s passion for the source material is readily apparent and is much to my great enjoyment matched by his ability to expertly convey itself in his scribblings. From radio to print Andriacco’s stories both at once pull the reader in to a familiar world and at the same time provide new adventures for us to experience. This most excellent collection has rightfully earned a center shelf location in my collection.”

“No Police Like Holmes” is in fact part of a quote from E. W. Hornung the author of the Raffles series, a fact spotted by an eagle-eyed Rachel Klingberg on the Sherlock Holmes Books Facebook group which now has members from over 30 countries around the world. The full quote being;

“Though he might be more humble, There’s no police like Holmes.”

The book comes out on November 9th and as always, Amazon UK is the first bookstore to have it – that’s what you get for being a London based publisher. The other bookstores will surely follow soon and US fans can get it direct from the publisher at MX Publishing USA. As always we’ll set aside about twenty pre-publication press copies for visitors to our site that will be sent out in October.

Dan will be appearing in person alongside many Holmes legends at Gillette to Brett III Nov. 11-13 in Indiana and will have some copies there to sign. Holmes fans that manage to get one of those signed first editions make sure you keep them safe, we have a feeling this one is going to be a bestseller.
