Out today – Sherlockian Musings: Thoughts on the Sherlock Holmes Stories

Is Sherlock Holmes really as rational as he seems?  He talks about the importance of reasoning and logic, but why then does he sometimes seem like a “strange Buddha”?  On the other hand, why in The Sign of the Four does Watson smash a Buddha?  What is going on in The Sign of the Four, that strange tale of Empire?  What is going on in all the original sixty stories in “the canon”? In this study of the stories, Sheldon Goldfarb explores questions like these, from the significance of the eggs in “Thor Bridge” to the reason Watson keeps leaving Holmes for an insubstantial wife.  What meanings lurk beneath the surface of these detective stories?  Why is there an obsession with Napoleon in this story or an article on free trade in this other?  Can we find answers to these questions? Perhaps.  In any case, in this collection of essays (or “Musings”) on each of the 60 stories, Dr. Goldfarb, an award-nominated mystery writer himself and the holder of a PhD in English literature, light-heartedly tries out a variety of perspectives, allowing readers to come to their own conclusions about such matters as the nature of the angel in “A Case of Identity” or the reason Holmes abandons his magnifying glass for binoculars in “Silver Blaze.”  Who brings binoculars to a horse race?  Indeed.

Out today – Cut To: Baker Street

It is well documented that Sherlock Holmes is the most depicted literary character on screen; he even has an entry in the Guinness Book of Records to prove it. This reference guide covers depictions of the world’s most famous detective, and his faithful companion, from the first silent film Sherlock Holmes is Baffled (1900) to the Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly comedy Holmes and Watson (2018).

As well as cinema and television portrayals, this book by Nicko Vaughan (Author of The Wordy Companion: An A-Z Guide to Sherlockian Phraseology) also covers documentaries, animations and web series adaptations alongside début feature artwork by graphic artist Georgia Grace Weston.

Combining encyclopaedia, biography and reference structure, this book comprehensively explores the many celluloid faces, cathode-ray shapes and digital sizes of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson, so far.

Out today: Too Many Clues (McCabe and Cody)

As chief spokesperson for St. Benignus University in small-town Erin, Ohio, Jeff Cody’s job responsibilities include handling “crisis communications.” And a crisis it is when veteran journalist Maggie Barton calls Jeff on the day after Thanksgiving. She wants the whole story about a dean forced to step down because of complaints of inappropriate behavior from three women who worked for him.

But that’s just the overture to double murder at SBU, taxing the abilities of larger-than-life amateur sleuth Sebastian McCabe and the police agencies of both town and gown. There are clues aplenty – too many, in fact. But how could the killer have entered the scene of the first murder without showing up on surveillance video? It seems like magic, or a locked room murder in a novel. Fortunately, Mac is a magician of no small ability as well as a mystery writer.

This ninth novel (and tenth book) of the McCabe-Cody series marks the debut of Aurelia Banfield, the disarming new assistant chief of St. Benignus University Police, and a farewell to two characters who have been part of the Erin scene from the beginning.

“A deliciously literate, witty series, with ingenious plots and engaging characters. Highly recommended!” – Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Out today – The Literary Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Volume 1

The eleven stories gathered together in these two volumes share their own common feature. All have connections to the world of belles lettres, the world of literature–some to celebrated authors in particular, others to themes or stories associated with specific writers … . Let others plumb this collection for more subtle themes. From Maupassant to Stevenson to Fitzgerald, the authorial giants who populate these pages are explanation enough for its title. As interesting as such literary associations may be, of course, one can never forget that in the finest tradition of all the other adventures of Sherlock Holmes, these sketches depict a series of heartless criminal acts–some more gruesome than others. This volume contains:

The Adventure of the Missing Necklace

The Adventure of the Amateur Emigrant

The Adventure of the Second William Wilson

The Adventure of the Aspen Papers

For Want of a Sword.

Reluctantly, Sherlock Holmes agrees to assist Inspector Lestrade who is being hounded by an obnoxious nobleman whose jewel-encrusted dagger has gone missing. However, what Holmes initially believes to be a simple theft turns out instead to be his first encounter with a master criminal, who is as ruthless as he is brilliant, and whom Watson dubs “The Merchant of Menace.”

Soon Holmes finds himself matching wits with a man who will steal anything – if the price is right. Moreover, this thief will go to any lengths, including blackmail and murder, to achieve his desired goal.

All Holmes knows for certain is the Merchant seems to specialize in priceless, one-of-a-kind articles. Will that be enough information for the Great Detective to outwit his foe?

Out today – The Detective, the Woman and the Pirate’s Bounty

In The Detective, The Woman and The Pirate’s Bounty, Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler retrace the steps of pirates as they uncover a conspiracy at the heart of Florida’s islands. Death threats and gangsters are not enough to stop the pair as they meet new friends and enemies while seeking pirate treasure and preserving law and order.

Thomas portrays this iconic character and his mannerisms brilliantly. The story was so good and is written in such a way that enables you to picture it happening; as if watching a film.  I’d most definitely like to read more from this author in the future.” – Curled up with a good book

Out today in hardcover: The Druid of Death – A Sherlock Holmes Adventure

On the morning of the vernal equinox in 1899, Holmes is roused from his bed by Lestrade. The inspector has received a report of a girl brutally murdered at Stonehenge.

Upon arriving at the famed site, Holmes discovers the body of a young woman. On her forehead, painted in blood, is a druidic symbol. On her side, also in blood, is a message written in a strange language that neither Holmes nor Lestrade can decipher. The girl was also eviscerated and her organs placed around her body. As a final touch, branches from yew trees had been artistically arranged around the corpse.

Holmes senses a malevolent force at work, but without data, he is powerless. As the weeks pass, he slowly gathers information about the ancient druids and Celtic mythology and begins to assemble a small army of experts to assist him.

Expecting the killer to strike again on the summer solstice, Holmes and Watson travel to the Nine Ladies in Derbyshire, the site of another stone circle that harkens to druidic times. While they are holding their vigil, Lestrade and his men are off keeping watch over the stone circles at Avebury and several other locations.

The Great Detective’s worst fears are realized when on the morning of the summer solstice, he learns that the body of a young man has been discovered in the eye of the White Horse of Uffington. Like the first victim, he too has been marked with a druidic symbol and his body bears a message. Aside from the symbol and the message, the only other difference appears to be that his body and organs have been surrounded by willow branches.

Realizing full well that a maniac reminiscent of the Ripper is on the loose, Holmes and Watson find themselves in a race against time as they try to locate the cult, identify the killer and prevent another tragedy.

As usual, Ryan is spot-on with narrator Watson’s tone and perspective – the deliberate musings, arcane details and captivating storytelling of Holmes’ sidekick are classic Watson. You could be reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself and have trouble distinguishing between the styles of each. And that, my dear Sherlockians, is the aura of authenticity that permeates Ryan’s imaginative series.” – Fran Wood, retired op-ed columnist and former books editor for The Star-Ledger, blogs at nj.com.
