Released today (18th May) – The first in the ‘Before Watson’ series.

It is Spring, 1874, and twenty-year-old Sherlock Holmes is a lonely, mopey, friendless Oxford student. He attends classes and spends countless solitary hours conducting chemical experiments, reading, and playing his violin. Suddenly, his life changes because of a serendipitous moment on campus. While walking on the grounds of the university and practicing fencing moves with his foil, he encounters Victor Trevor and his sweetheart, Poppy Stamford, younger sister of the man who will one day introduce Sherlock to Dr. John Watson. Having just attended the final rowing contest of Eights Week, Victor and Poppy are also walking with her bull terrier. When the dog decides he doesn’t like the looks of Sherlock, he sinks his teeth into Sherlock’s ankle.  This dog bite incident becomes a life-changing event for all of them. Through his new friendship with Victor Trevor and encouraged by Victor’s father to use his genius for detective work, Sherlock discovers his uncanny abilities as he and Poppy are thrust into a dangerous investigation into England’s notorious baby-farming industry. Be an eyewitness to the emergence of how Sherlock became the man and the legend we know today….

“Petr Kopl’s SHERLOCK HOLMES: A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA is an imaginative comic-book adaptation of more thanv one story, with spectacular full-color artwork and a preface by Ales Kolo-drubec. First published in Czech and now translated into English, it’s a welcome sample of Kopl’s ‘Victoria Regina’ series. He has an interestingvweb-site at <www.petrkopl.cz> (if your computer runs Google Translate you can pretend you’re fluent in Czech)”

How does the Conan Doyle canon inspire me?

barefootonbakerstreet's avatarBarefoot on Baker Street

sir-arthur-conan-doyle-1One of my Facebook friends messaged me to ask an interesting question – how does the canon influence my writing? I thought, ah-ha! Great idea for a blog…

The canon is always at the heart of anything I write with regard to Sherlock Holmes. I just like to put my own spin on things.

For some, the goal is to recreate the voice of the original stories so accurately that when people read it, they feel like they have stumbled across a lost work by Doyle – or even Watson himself.

I greatly admire those who take this approach, even more so if they manage to pull it off. But for me, the creative challenge lay in not trying to replicate, but rather trying to innovate – take the canon as a starting point and re-tell it in a fresh new way which would appeal to not only existing fans…

“Marlene Aig’s SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE LUFTON LADY (London: MX Publishing, 2013; 95 pp.) is a welcome reminder of a fine writer who died far too young; set in 1878, it’s a tale of a younger and more romantic Holmes, nicely told, and with an appreciative forward by written by Susan Dahlinger.”

Former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ‘Undershaw’ is finally sold

barefootonbakerstreet's avatarBarefoot on Baker Street

Yes Undershaw’s future has finally been resolved after years of dereliction and threat of unsympathetic development. I am delighted to hear that the new owners are actually an independent school called Stepping Stones which specialises in educating children with special needs, including autism.

The character of Sherlock Holmes is regarded by many as having autistic tendencies and reading of his adventures has been an inspiration to those who share some of these traits. So this seems like a very favourable outcome which will bring new life to the building Doyle lovingly created.

Stepping Stones want to see how the legacy and history of Undershaw can serve the children and I think this is a wonderful way to honour the memory of Doyle and his most famous creation. Their curriculum has a strong emphasis on creativity so I’m sure the new surroundings will provide much inspiration – just as they did for…
